Do you volonteer? Where and how often?

Any websites or anything I can use to find the right place for me? I have FINALLY got some time, just for the summer and I would like to make some positive use of it, one or two days per week. I just need to find the right place.

How canI find a charity that needs volunteers in my city?

Yes, but nothing magnanimous for me.

I just volunteer my time to take pictures of the local church theater group. they return almost all the profits to the church. I give them free access to the photos, or they can buy prints from my site.

If I burn DVD sets, upwards of 1000 photos of practices and several show nights, I charge maybe $10. One guy was charging $10 for one 8x10 print of the full cast photo!

I do, have all my life.

[shameless plug] I currently am with the Make A Wish Foundation. I am a Wish Granter, but also am on several event planning committees.

There are many organizations that you can volunteer for. Make A Wish is in desperate need of volunteers. I know in my area kids are on a waiting list because we do not have enough Wish Granters (all kids wil eventually be given their wish, but those whose life expectancies are much longer or who are not terminal at all will have to wait while those who have more dire prognoses are granted their wishes).

Wish Granters choose their wishes. While some wishes can be involved, you have control over how many you are doing at any given time. If you do not have the time or inclination to be a Wish Granter, we have plenty of other positions from clerical work to planning fundraising events. It truly is a wonderful organization.

I am a member of Disney's VoluntEars. They have events almost every weekend. I go when I can and I bring my family as needed.

Right now, just at my church, I do A LOT of volunteer work there.

Once the boys get older (they are 2 and 3) and I have more free time I'd like to do more work elsewhere but right now I don't have the ability to do stuff that requires me to keep to schedule and DH is out of a town a lot so that keeps me from being able to commit while with my church a lot of the stuff I do can be done around my schedule.

I am an assistant coach for our son's baseball team and have been for 4 years. I also usher at church and help in children's ministry when I can. That keeps me busy enough.

Good for you......and all volunteers!

Here, we have Hands On Atlanta, which is a local clearing house for several charity organizations. I've been connected with Foster Care Support, working at the Ronald McDonald House, painting with kids at the children's hospital, etc, through them. Maybe there's a similar thing in your area.

Volunteer Match is also good. If you are willing to devote a week of your time this summer, there are probably specialty summer camps in need of counselors. One I work with here is for kids with bleeding disorders (mostly hemophilia) and they're are always needing male counselors. This facility also hosts camps for kids with HIV, cancer, kidney issues, etc. There's bound to be something near you.

I volunteer online with Distributed Proofreaders. They take books that are in the public domain (out of copywrite protection) and make digital books that are shared with the world via Project Gutenberg. You can do as little or as much as you want. Even proofreading one page helps! www.pgdp.net

I volunteer at my children's school a lot. I also assist with both boys baseball teams and anythign else that gets asked of me usually. I am go to for a lot of families for when their sick kids need to be picked up from school or when they need to stay out of school. I also watch two teacher's kids when they are sick.

When kids were small, I volunteered at school, was a girl scout leader, marching band parent, sports parent, bible class teacher, etc. Now that they are older, I've trained our dog to be a therapy dog. We go to hospitals, nursing homes, libraries, schools and more. What a rewarding experience. People beg us to come to their room or parents' room for a visit. Children love to pet her as they read stories to her. We are also on a dog drill team of the dogs performing to music. We take the show on the road for all kinds of events.

Volunteer as a Girl Scout leader and a Cub Scout Pack treasurer, thru the scouts we participate in many charitable projects.

I am a huge 4-H volunteer. My dh and I on our Church Pre Cana team and I also take our dogs to nursing homes, hospitals and schools for pet therapy.

Most places now to volunteer you need to go through the screening process so if you only have time this summer it maybe too late to do so.

WDWFAM... Is that a collie in your avitar?? W eahve two smooth collies that my daughter shows.

No, Wendy is a sheltie. Quite the diva, I might add.

Are you TDI (Therapy Dogs International) certified? That's the test that we took to get the certification.

I'm a volunteer at my local zoo in the mammal department. We're moving so I won't be able to continue, but it was a lot of fun and very educational.

Not as often as I'd like.

I think my favorite thing is cooking dinner for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House. I've only done it a couple times, but it is a really nice experience.

What I'd ♥ to do is walk dogs for the animal shelter, but it's not close enough.

I am currently a CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocate for abused and neglected children. I work with kids in the foster care system, supporting them while they are in the system.

I a very involved and spend a great deal of time with all of my CASA kids.
As a CASA you can carry as little as one case..
you can also become a Friend of CASA which is when you do not carry an individual case but you volunteer with fundraising, clerical work etc.

Being a CASA has brought so much into my life. It is good to be needed.. to be honest, these kids have given me so much joy it is unbelievable.

I have also done volunteer work at church, my kid's schools, meals on wheels, several nursing homes and political campaigns. I gotta admit that ''giving''.... gives back to me as it makes me feel good.

I have alsways volunteered at the scouts and school, since being laid off, I am now working in the kitchen for Meals on Wheels and have just completed SHIP training ( Senior Health Insurance Program) and will be a SHIP counselor every week explaining Medicare, Medicaid, supplements and LTC and helping with claims..Beside the BSA troop and the venture crew I am Venture Commissioner and on the Marketing Committee with the council..
