Do you use the over-the-door shoe holders?

Not really a cruising question, but since so many here advocate these (sans the over the door hooks), I hoped someone could answer my question.

No dispute at how great these are for holding toiletries and other assorted sundries, but what about shoes? Specifically, size 12 men's sneakers? My DS is going off to residence and loves his shoes. I'm wondering if one of these shoe holders would help him keep his shoe stash organized or just be a pain. The ones I'm seing (online, because we're on lockdown right now) look like they can hold ladies' sandals or kids shoes, but none show ads with adult men's shoes in them.

Any opinions, thoughts, recommendations or suggestions?

Do you mean just for general use - not on a cruise?

I can't address whether they would hold men's shoes, I know the ones my mother (and I) had years ago didn't work for us because it just wasn't worth the effort to keep putting shoes back in them, and they wound up hanging empty most of the time.

Now, we had this type, that hangs from the clothes bar.

I’ve used one before and didn’t find it that helpful. I’m not sure how well one would hold larger shoes, I think each individual shoe would need it’s own pocket with a size 12. Will he have any kind of closet space where a rack or cubbie could fit? Or maybe one of these expandable shelves that can hang? Those could hold tennis shoes but not boots or anything.

Those look awesome. I haven't seen them on my online shopping travels.

You make a good point about "bothering to put them back". My DS is not organized. It might be too much for him to make work.

Yes, one shoe per pocket. He has a small closet. Maybe a little shelf is a better idea. I just know at home there's always 4 or 5 pairs strewn around, but he won't have the kind of space in res to keep those shoes lying around. That's why I was thinking of a shoe holder.

I recently retired and got rid of almost all of my work clothes and shoes. That made our closet situation a little more tolerable.

How about a basket or storage cube-type box? If he isn’t big on organization, he can just toss the shoes in there. Maybe something that fits under the bed.

DD uses an over-the-door shoe holder — but even a ladies’ size 7 doesn’t always fit well and sort of flops outward when it does. She mostly has flip flops in it now, plus some scarves and hair accessories more than shoes.

How does your son store them now..? Does he take care of them or just toss them in a pile? My husband wears a size 11 and they fit just fine in this holder we have in the coat closet: https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/skubb-organizer-with-9-compartments-dark-gray-80498557/
We have enough space at the front and back door for him to set them aside there. They aren't in any special organizational method, just sitting by all the other family shoes.

This IKEA one looks better than some of the ones I've seen elsewhere. The pockets look deeper:

It also has the hanger, not the over the door hooks, which would be great for cruising, too.

Also, since I'm in the IKEA rabbit hole, this would be good for making FE holders:

My DS and his friends wouldn't be caught dead with shoe organizers. Even if DS had one, he'd just chuck his shoes in a pile on the floor of his closet anyway.
