RuDisney, it was still easier for him to do that than for you to lug them all inside. I have found that at some of the smaller airports. It sure made it easy for me to still return the rental car and come back and there were my suitcases inside.
Just remember, no matter where you check your bags, always verify that the tags they put on them have the correct airport code, and the correct routing if you are not on a non-stop!
I HAVE in the past had my bags tagged wrong, luckily I caught it before my bags headed for YYC (Calgary) ended up in YYZ (Toronto).

That is excellent advice and it does apply even if you go to the counter. If they punch in the destination and ressie correctly, there should not be a problem, but, one bad key stroke and you could be in Calgary and your bags in Hong Kong.
