Hi my Dis friends I am hoping to hear your opinions on the following question. In our previous trips we have always used travelers checks for buying anything we need. We were at the bank today and the teller suggested we use our check card instead. Has anyone ever had a problem using their check card anywhere? How about the little food stands? We have all of our cash set a side from our rummage sales and such so we really would rather not put anything on the CC other than the hotel bill. Any help would be great. TIA

1) Yah, shur.
2) Anywhere stand/location that takes credit cards can take a check card.

PS - Just don't stand-up and order peanuts at a hockey game and yell check-card!

I LOVE using my checkcard. It is so much easier and safer than cash. If you have a Visa checkcard, there should be a $0 liability on your card. (Check with your bank to make sure, but I know that Bank of America offers this). That means that if the card is stolen or lost, you can call the bank and let them know, and they will immediately block the card and you are not responsible for any of the fraudulent charges made on your account with the card. Also, if for some reason there is a problem with using the card (such as the rare case that a charge posts twice to your account or something like that) you can call your bank and they will fix it for you.

Most places in the World accept check cards. I am not sure about the carts. IIRC, some of carts are cash only. But for the restaurants and gift shops, etc., they all take the cards. As long as it has the VISA logo (or whatever card company sponsors your bank's check cards) then they can be run as "credit" and the money is just charged to your checking account. A check card is not a credit card. The money comes directly from your checking account, so you can only spend as much as you have in your account.

Ever since the invention of the checkcard, I keep less than $5 cash in my wallet and I have never had a need for traveler's checks.

HTH,

I've used my debit card everytime we've gone!

The only places that don't accept them are the little separate food and gift stands.

As far as cashiers at tickets or merchandise, if it is plastic and has a magnetic stripe and after sliding it we get an approval and the receipt prints we don't care what what kind of card it is. It can be credit, debit, gift, or whatever; all we know is that one of the major bank systems tells us it is valid and will allow the computer to complete the transaction.

We treat all cards the same. However, if it is declined that is a different story...

I used to use my check card. Now I prefer to use a Disney gift card (which can be purchased and refilled at most Disney retailers). Even the little drink and ice cream stands take the gift card. You get a receipt each time showing your balance. I fell in love with this idea during the Food and Wine Fest and won't go back to check card or cash.

I used mine exclusively. I didn't have any issues.

I've used my check card, only brought $20 cash for a 10-day stay and came home with $18 of it. I've also used the Disney gift card, but that one was trickier because I couldn't spend everything on it, and there's no way to cash it back in. So now I have a Disney gift card with a bunch of money left on it that I HAVE to use on Disney stuff. Would have spent less if I'd stuck with the check card.

The only kiosk I really noticed at Epcot last weekend (I wasn't really paying attention) that didn't accept anything but cash was the French wine cart. Our debit card worked everywhere else.

The only thing to be wary of is limits...I put a 250 daily limit on mine when I opened my acct at a credit union many years ago and forgot. OK suffice it to say I was a little mortified when I went to pay for a large purchase and it was declined  . I had more than enough in checking and plenty in savings to cover this and a ton more. I asked my credit union about it later, they are very small-I often do my banking in DH's work lol, and they told me just to call and get it changed "dailY" :confused3 Umm no thanks...she also suggested that I have the store call and get it approved  umm again no thanks...and then she went on to say they only do that during business hours and no weekends or holidays. I quickly got an 8% fixed rewards credit union card and now use that and then transfer the money from my checking account to the card to pay it off when I get home!

The only place that we couldn't use ours was the funnel cake stand in the American Pavilion at Epcot. We used it all over on every one of our trips and never had a problem. I did pay off my balance at my resort every couple of days because I do have a $750 daily limit so I made sure that I never exceeded that.

Most outside places take the credit card. However, if it's not a "major" cart, aka not a popcorn/pretzel/ice cream/soda wagon, they may not take it. Or if they are pushing the cart around. Also, make sure you do have some cash, the machines tend to go down a lot.
