I have never felt comfortable letting my wife put her wedding ring set in the safe, because I think that someone at the front desk has another key, and could have seen it on her finger, etc.

I would like to use it but I am worried. Can anyone comment? Thanks!

If it's extremely valuable (sentimentally or otherwise), I would put it in the front desk safe, or leave it home. There was an "incident" when we were there in either May or June about someone's cash, the safe, and work being done in their room, unknown to them. I didn't stay to hear the end, since it would have been obvious I was eavesdropping. We were visiting at POR, and the "discussion" was taking place at the end of the counter, in the area where you go to use the restrooms in the lobby. So if you feel uncomfortable, always go with what will make you feel safe.

We always use the WDW resort safes for our money and have never had a problem. Personally I do not travel with my diamonds though. My DH bought me a gold wedding band that I use when traveling. I can leave the diamonds behind at home. If you think your wife is going to have to take her ring off then why even bring it? You might want to buy a gold band for a few hundred dollars and not worry about it. You could probably get them even cheaper. If you decide to still take the ring I still trust the safes at WDW. We usually have around $1200 in it on every trip and it was fins.

At the Dolphin the safes have digital codes that you set yourself. Much better then the key type. I am hoping that Disney upgrades their safes soon.

Even with the digital ones, there is still a master code that the hotel can use to get into any safe I think. There sort of has to be, or else if someone forgets their code, or hits a wrong key without noticing they wouldn't be able to get their stuff back easily.

Actually, the key safes use "Medeco" locks which are far superior to any digital code lock used by Disney.

It is a safe in a hotel room. I wouldn't take anything of great value on vacation. I certainly wouldn't leave a pile of cash and jewels in it and think that I have the only key.

We always use the safe while in WDW, but then again I'm storing Travelers cheques. Next time I think I'm going to use debit card. Maybe 1/2 & 1/2.

I use the safe at all Disney resorts and usually store my cell phone, envelope with future spending $, dinner show tkts etc - but would not put valuable rings in the safe. I think every resort has safety depsoit boxes for free to use as well (they used to anyway). Ask at the front desk or call ahead to be sure.

We have always used the safe in our room. I do not leave my wedding rings...but I do leave some cash, travelers checks, & I have locked up our pass ports.

I agree with what everyone is saying....don't leave your diamonds or anything sentimental.

I wouldn't bring anything of much value with me. I generally don't carry cash, I use travelers checks or my debit card; and for trips, I leave jewelry home. I just don't trust the room safes.

If you have something you must bring , I'd leave it in the front desk safe not the room safe.

Yes, but I don't typically bring anything that needs to be locked in a safe.

In August 2003, we stayed at the Dolphin where they have the new digital safes. When I went to place our airline tickets, keys to our rental car and a few other things in it, it was closed and locked. We had to call down to the front desk and they sent up someone (I called him a safe cracker) with some special tools to reset the code. It took him almost 15 minutes to do so, it wasn't an easy task. With that being said, any safe can be broken into with the proper tools and if the person knows what they are doing. Even so, we always use the safes and have never had a problem with someone breaking it open and stealing anything.

I can guarantee you that no one at the front desk has a key to the safe. There is only one key for that lock - that is why it costs you $35 if you loose it :)
I have worked with the engineering dept for WDW for 4 years - we are the ones that are called when you need your safe rekeyed. They literally have to take out the lock and put a new one in (with a new different key). AND if you do new a rekey - they engineer has to have a manager with them to document anything in the safe and file a report... etc... etc... AND if that STILL doesn't put you at ease, the electric locks to the rooms have a computer that stores all of the infomation of WHO and WHEN someone comes into your room. And all of the Cast Members room keys are signed out electronically each day.

Sorry, I don't have any experience with the electric coded safes though. But if the hotel does have a master code, you can still have the room lock interigated and find out who was in your room.

that's actually a really good thing to know...thanks PT!

This is true - I lost the key to our safe at the ASMu resort a few years ago and was told I would have to pay for them to put a new lock on it - luckily someone found the key in the parking lot and returned it to the front desk.

However, there have been times, when the maid has propped open the door with a chair, and gone between two rooms to clean. The wonderful maid we had the last time we were at POR said they are not suppose to do that, and they were suppose to actually be in the room with the door closed to clean, but they were training someone, and working on two rooms at once. At one time, the "newbie" was in the second room asking questions and the first room was propped open. I commented to her, that I didn't want them to do that at my room, since our computer is left out. She said, not to worry, they aren't suppose to do that anyway...but they were LOL!
We've never had a problem with our room safe, but again, I would never leave anything of such value that it would be painful to have it stolen.

We use the safes. Of course they can't stop a professional, but probably good enough to prevent what they are intended for--the "casual" walk-in theft by some one out for whatever they can get hold of quickly.
Much better certainly than just leaving vauables in the desk drawer, or worse, lying about in plain view.
