Do you tip for housekeeping at DVC? Just curious about how many do or don't.

way.
However I don't like the business of being told how much to give, like 18-20% on meals.
Its not normal at home but as I worked as a wine waiter at school I have always appreciated the need to reward people for good service.

I tend to be an overtipper, both in amount and in the types of people we tip. In the scheme of what we spend at WDW, even generous tips are a tiny percentage of our vacation costs. :)

I always struggle with this - and I know people probably think I'm cheap...

But we rarely stay long enough to ever see housekeeping. We're normally only there for 1 to 3 nights.

If someone delivers something to our room per our request, then we will tip them for that service.

But, we expect our room to be clean upon arrival. Just as we expect there to be someone at the front gate to raise the bar, someone behind the counter to check us in, and someone to take our money at the general store.

But I know that many have commented that the housekeeping staff is paid poorly.

I work for a bank. My tellers don't get paid SQUAT! But they're expected to do their job without a tip. And they provide a service, also. (With a smile, preferably! :) )

I don't know - what does everybody else think?

I have to say that until reading the discussions here on DIS, I didn't even think about tipping the housekeeping staff. I usually clean up the room -I also make sure that our towels are put in one spot for them to pick up, our trash is out already....really all they do is resupply paper plates (studio visit) and towels. There isn't really anything for them to do except restock the room, so I never felt that a tip was needed. May have to rethink that since seems like so many posters feel that tipping is essential.

Sometimes for the routine. If the service exceeds expectations or I request something special -- always.

.... but only because I simply forget, or more precisely, I just don't think about it. Some hotels actually have a little card with a message from housekeeping & a tip envelope laying on the nite stand as a reminder. I think they are tacky, but maybe it would help me remember.

You need to keep in mind, WDW is an international destination and many come from countries where tipping is not standard. Having the information presented where our visitors can see it when it is relevant is a good thing.

I used to be annoyed with the 'automatic' gratuity on larger parties at many establishments...then I realized that in our case, they were denying themselves a larger tip so I got over it. :cool2:

On topic, we almost always leave a gratuity for mousekeeping. We almost always leave a mostly clean room too. It's my money to leave and just because I'm on 'vacation', it doesn't mean I would feel comfortable letting someone else clean up my mess. I know almost everybody you'd actually come across at WDW works a lot harder for a lot less money than I do.

We always leave something for housekeeping. Not a lot but something. We are very fortunate to be able to be at WDW together and feel it is a good thing to spend a little extra thanking those who make the trip nice for us.

WARNING: Philisophical statement about to occur. The more good deeds you do for others, whether it be simply holding a door, saying good morning or thanking someone for a job well done, the more good things will happen to you in return.

I asked this question, because it seems to me that some on the DVC board feel strongly about tipping, and others feel strongly about not tipping. I was just curious how many here actually do or don't. We rarely tip for housekeeping, because I am quite sure the same person does not do it before we arrive or while we are there. If I request something special during my stay, then Yes, I would tip. We ALWAYS tip very well at restaurants and for other services, but housekeeping has never been one of those that we routinely tip.

***" We rarely tip for housekeeping, because I am quite sure the same person does not do it before we arrive or while we are there."***

I've had that same thought, but also realized that in the end it didn't matter. The CM who did a great job when you checked in deserves a tip. There are only so many housekeepers doing X number of rooms. The law of averages says they'll get their fair share of the tips. Think of it as tipping in advance, hoping the CM who cleans your room after you leave does I good job for me. And hopefully I'll remember to take care of the CM for the next guy.

about to get a bit "argumentitive" here...

While I realize that this is our "vacation" aren't the houskeeping's salaries part or our dues? So I wonder if tipping is really necessary?

I would tip them if they went out of thier way to do something or we left a terrible mess (which usually isn't the case). But in general I probably wouldn't tip.

If I was in a normal hotel then yes, we tip.

Tipping housekeeping is generally done each day or for DVCers at T&T and full cleaning days. That way you tip the person who does the room that day. Staff do rotate at times, but weekend staff are often different from weekday staff.

I have been told that it is a non tipping position. I will tip if they bring something to my room (even if it was supposed to be there in the first place), but, other than that, no.

I voted No. I usually cancel housekeeping from DVC. Maybe they should tip me for that, lol.

I've always tipped even though I never leave a mess to clean up. In return I usually get extra soaps, etc.

On my visit last week I got a nice note from my housekeeper, thanking me for the tip.

I leave a small tip for midweek T&T and tip larger upon check-out for the CM's that have to clean up after us and get the room ready for the next guests.

Ummmm....... who vacuums the rug, mops the floor, dusts the furniture, changes the sheets, cleans the tub and shower, etc.?

We are all fortunate enough to be able to take regular and relatively elaborate vacations while these people make next to nothing and clean up after us. More often than not they do it with a smile too. Skip a round of drinks or ice creams and leave housekeeping 20 bucks. It won't kill you and you'll be helping someone who needs it much more than any of us do. What goes around comes around..........

I think that people on the DVC board feel strongly about nearly everything!! :p

We tip housekeeping....that doesn't make us oversplurgers or mean that we like to "show off our wealth".

Others don't tip....that doesn't make them cheap or insensitive.

It's a personal choice....no right or wrong here. :)

We alway tip when we leave, but not on T&T day. We usually stay 6+ nights so I leave $10 for a 1-BR and $15 for a 2-BR. Quality service from this WDW department is more critical to me having a good vacation experience than the few minutes of service I get from the bellmen or valet.

I don't understand why you would give the valet $4 (for 3 minutes of work), or the bellman $20 (for 10 minutes of work). but leave $0 for the person who spends 2hrs cleaning up unit you've used.
