Do you tip if you do not eat in dinners?

A friend of ours is interested in DCL, but they are not interested in the rotation dinners. Pluto's or Topsiders is where they would eat dinner. Do they still tip the server and assistant server if they do not have dinner in the dining rooms?

I told them I thought you still needed to tip because those people may be working at Topsiders, etc during the day. Also, do you tip when you have the casual dinner at Topsider's?

No flames please. I'm just trying to get information. Thanks!

I can't imagine eating all your meals at the fast food places, that would get old. But even if they DID do this, yes, I would still tip the servers. :)

The casual dinner option at Topsider's is not available every night, and tips are not expected there.

I too would give the tip, even if I did not eat in the diningroom at all. Everyone is assigned to a dining team, so if you do not tip, they do not get the income for those empty spots on that cruise. We have never skipped all of the meals, but we have always tipped the full amount even when we went to Palo one night.

please tell your friend that the rotation dinners were the best part of the cruise for us.....the food, the server, assistant server and the head server made the cruise what it was....incredibly special.....

Thanks! I agree they still deserve a tip. I enjoy the rotation dinners, but sometimes I wish we did not have to stop having fun to get ready for dinner. We have to skip a night once in awhile.

Thanks for your thoughts!

if I did not use the rotation dining I certainly would not tip.paying for a service I didn't use does not make sense to me.

The wait staff that works dinner in the dining room also work breakfasts and lunches, the buffets, Castaway Cay, and sometimes the fastfood stations as well. The tips cover the service for all of these. IMHO, tipping the wait staff is part of the cost of a cruise vacation. Having the tips for the week combined with one serving crew just makes it easier than to individually tip your server(s) at each meal.

I'm in agreement with Bill. However, if they do go to any "served" meals, then they should tip, but not the full amount. If they are concerned about it, they could tell the head server that they will not be coming to dinner so there will be no expectation of a tip. I don't think anyone expects to be tipped for service they do not provide.

I'm in agreement with Señor Ferrari. Unless you plan on bringing a loaf of bread and a jar of peanut butter, you will be using their services. The servers work all day for passengers, not just at dinner. Our assistant server was clearing tables by the pools. Our main server was serving food at lunch on Castaway Cay.

You're not just tipping for the dinners. You're tipping for service for any food you get on the cruise.

Not to get into a big debate here, please note that I said to tip less, not nothing at all. I believe that tipping a pro-rata amount based on what services are "used" is appropriate. We can all agree to disagree.

Even if they went to topsiders or some other option
i believe full amount should Be Tipped there r people working at those places and the servers work Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Yes We Can Agree To Disagree
how could u miss dinner at Anamiators palate (SP) ?
MCNUSS Please share your formula for this Prorated method i would be interested to see that ?????????
would also like to see the schedule of where and when they r going to dine ?? come on what r u going to save ??????????

Since I am planning to eat on board and in the restaurants for all my meals, I will be tipping the full amount and then some, so I have no need to devise a formula. An opinion was asked for, one was given, and now I am done. For heaven's sake.....

I tip according to what service is rendered as in any restaurant.you wouldn't tip like that at your hometown restaurant now would you..and if you don't go to dinner you certainly don't owe them anything, geez.

If you can afford the cruise, you can afford the tip. Please don't quibble over $12 pr person. If you are going to "pro rate" what you do or do not eat. They will most certainly eat breakfast or lunch or dinner on the boat somewhere and nothing in life is for free. If you don't want to tip. Don't go.
This is like the nightmare of going to dinner with a group of people for dinner who want to pay only for what they ate. If you don't split the bill evenly, you don't go with me.

What to tip? What to wear? All personal decisions and yet constant debating (bickering) over the subjects. Do what you are comfortable with. I personally left my head server nothing and told him why. Not once during the cruise did he even come to our table of 9 to introduce himself. I know what you are all saying, he does things in the background that go unnoticed so things go smoothly. Then why did I see him at 2 other tables almost constantly. Our Head Server and Assistant were great so I gave them his share and felt very good about it.
