Do you tip for takeout food?

The first hotel I worked at was full service w/ a Bennigan's restaurant. We got discounted food during our shifts, and it was always take-out since you couldn't sit in the restaurant while you were expected to be working. It was always entered as a take-out meal. The computer system (a standard micros system that a lot of restaurants use) still counted that take-out food in the standard tip-out amount. (I.E. the system would automatically report the server's food sales for the night and automatically reported a tip of at least 10% on all food sales, no matter what, in order to prevent tax fraud) So, yes, I tip for take-out. If the computer system is automatically recording the server's sales for the day and the irs is taxing them on those tips, then I feel like they need to get their tips on that amount.

I do not tip for take out unless there is a special issue. One time I ordered and the person brought the food to my car since my baby was asleep, but if I pick it up then I don't. I do tip for delivery, that is worth a lot to me!!!

I think it is crazy how much and often people seem to think tips are in order.

I lived in Europe for a while and tipping is sooooo different.

If the place I'm getting takeout has a wait staff, I tip for my carryout order. Those people at the takeout have to do most of the same stuff in less time as the wait staff would do if you were sitting down.

You have to remember it goes to a good cause.Around here during baseball season the boys (tag) at different location. They stand outside stores, gas stations etc with cans and in uniform. All donations helps toward the cost of tournaments, and expenses.You dont have to give, just say no thank you..

I don't tip. It's not my responsibility to pay for someone else's children to attend events. I don't consider sending cheerleaders to a competition or whatever the group is, to be a good cause. That's something that either the school district or the parents should be paying for.

I have to agree with this...and I have 3 children that do different sports and activities. I have never seen guest baggers, and I'm happy about that! I don't mind seeing Girl Scouts outside a store selling cookies, because well I love Girl Scout cookies. Plus, they are providing an item for sale, not just asking for money. Just like when the football players do a car wash. They actually wash my car for $10 and there are adults there making sure they do a good job. I don't mind that.

I am not thrilled when I see high school band members standing there with buckets begging for money. If it's my district and I have a dollar on me, I'll usually give it to them, but I dislike it.

To answer the OP's question, I only tip if food is delivered to my house. Usually $2-$3 dollars. I don't tip at places like Dunkin Donuts. Of course, I usually pay with my debit card for everything, so I don't even have cash in my hand.

For delivery, we're great tippers. For pick-up, we rarely tip. For counter service restaurants in our town where we're regulars, we throw a tip in the tip jar. Simple as that.

No, we don't tip for any kind of carry out. We do tip really well if we do the Applebee's curbside to go.

We don't do pizza delivery, but any type of service like that we tip way beyond what is normal.

I tip on take out from a sit down restaurant..not for pizza or for Chinese that's take out only. The reason is, I worked in a finer dining restaurant and each night one server had to (in between tables) do the take out orders. So one of us would have to take/submit order, package/wrap up with utensils, etc. and still wait your tables. I usually tip 10% on take out of this type.

I honestly feel that way too. I kind of hate having to dodge the begging kids when I go to the grocery store on the weekend. As much as I think kids playing sports or whatever is a great idea, I also know that every October when I'm looking for help raking leaves in our yard or help cleaning out the garage or whatever there is not a willing kid to be found.

I hardly ever order Applebees etc curbside to Go. If they bring it to my car I will tip a couple of bucks. If I go in to pick it up, usually not.

These threads always go the same way "XXXXX works their butts off." I agree they probably do. Most good employees work their butts off. That's what work is all about.

And honestly I wish all these business would just pay their employees what they need to be paid and charge me the prices necessary to cover it. I hate having to remember to tip left and right.
