I went to Sonic with the kids for the first time last week. When the nice girl came very quickly with our food I gave her a $3-4 tip. She looked totally shocked and kept asking if I needed change. The order came to about $17.00 and she was very efficient.

Does anyone else tip? I mean she did bring the food to our car..

I don't think i would of though to tip her its fastfood but there is nothing wrong with tipping if you want to.
The ones that bring you your food with skates on should be tipped lol.

I would say yes. I have only been to Sonic once we tipped but we have a local drive-in & we always tip there.

I tip $1 -$3 depending on the size of the order and if I have cash;) If I just stopped in to get a drink and I pay with my debit card I don't always tip.
(But I do agree, if they are on skates they deserve a tip!)

Yes I tip.

I actually worked at sonic in HS (years and years ago!) and we got tips. Some better than others!

I usually don't buy $17 in one order so I normally just round up my total to the next $ or I just give a $1. I regularly buy a drink so I just give $2 and tell them thank you. If I've got the kiddos with me and it is more $ I just try to give a $1 and whatever change from the order.

She was probably just shocked to get such a large tip.

DH and I went to sonic a few weeks ago and we went through the drive thru because we weren't sure if we should have tipped either:rotfl: I think I would have though. It seems no different than sitting in a restaurant and having the waitress bring the food to you.

Nope - the kids who work at our local sonic start out at $7.25 an hour and tipping is not expected.

I never have.

I considered it fast food and no different than when the cashiers at Mickey D's are fetching food for you.

If they changed how they wish to pay their employees so it becomes a tipped postion, I would then.

We've only been to a Sonic once, and I do think we tipped.

When we go to Sault Ste. Marie they have a drive-in type restaurant called Clyde's and the car hop comes out when you pull up, takes your order, and brings it out to your car so we do tip when we go there, usually at least a couple of dollars, sometimes more.

Nope. Those jobs aren't like waitress and waiter jobs. They're compensated at a much higher rate.

Yes, I always do so. Not much, but if the order is $3.25 I will give $4.00 and tell them to keep the change.

I don't see the logic in comparing it to McDonalds. If at Sonic and other drive-in style restaurants they bring the food to your car, and come back to get the tray when you're done that's more than they do at McD's. And if they're wearing skates, even moreso. :) And some of them don't have the speaker system, the car hop comes out to your car when you drive up, so there's an extra trip as well.

We had 2 Sonics where I live. I go to the first one which has always been better at service, but it also has a drive up window. They actually closed the window and lost business and then they reopened it.

The only sonic we went to didn't bring a tray. They brought the food out in a bag. We also paid by credit card, and there was no place to leave a tip. I thought we would leave a tip, but then the person never came back, so where would we have left it? Also payment was upfront before food even came. I don't like to leave a tip before I know what the service is like.:confused3

We always tip a couple of bucks when we stay there. We don't tip if we go through the drive through.

no, I have never tipped at Sonic, nor do I know anyone who has ever tipped there either...:confused3

I usually tip at Sonic when I pay with cash but not as much as I would a normal waitperson. I usually pay with debit card and it doesn't give an option to leave a tip. Also, our Sonic not longer leaves the tray and comes back when you're done. They bring the food out in a bag. If you need something else you have to use the call button.

I can't believe people would tip when using the drivethrew :confused3 That's strange to me.

A Sonic opened in my town about a year ago, and I have never tipped there. My DH and I usually order in the seating area (I hate eating in the car) or go through the drive-thru lane, and we always use a debit card. It actually never even occurred to me to tip.
