Do you think this kind of water purifier would work?

DH and DS are going caoeing next year in the boudary waters with scouts. they will be drinking from the rivers/lakes. DH is looking at different purifying systems and came across this. whatever they take has to be small because they are really limited to how much stuff they can bring. Anyone have any experience or thoughts on this?

I just saw this on TV a few days ago and thought it was the coolest thing.

I have no idea if it really works, but it would be great if it did.

Since one can become very, very ill - even acquire potentially life-threatening illnesses from drinking water from lakes and streams - I would run this past a doctor and get their opinion.. :goodvibes

Yes, this system REALLY works. However it purifies the water (i.e., removes the nasty bugs that can make you sick) but it doesn't filter the water. So if you just dipped your water bottle into the lake or stream, and then used the Steripen, the water would be "cleansed" to drink, but it would still have the little floaty organic stuff that you'd find/see in the water. This isn't really an issue with faster moving streams though, basically just lakes or slower moving water. One can use a coffee filter to strain out the floating stuff.

Having said that, it's a good idea to have a back-up system, like water purifying tablets (iodine, aqua mira, etc.), just in case something goes wrong with one's primary purifying system.

MSR and PUR make pump water filter/purifier systems as well ... this is what I use regularly when backpacking.

.

This is a great idea! Where can these purifying tablets be purchased?

You can buy water bottles with built in filters for about half the price of that.
