Do you think this is weird or too cheap?

My DS plays on a summer baseball team that was invited to play in 3 out of town tournaments. Our cost for these Wed.-Sun.tournaments is a hotel $99 per night plus food for our family. The hotels offer a breakfast and have a refrigerator and microwave in each room. For lunch we will probably be at a ball field so I was planning on sandwiches, fruit, etc. I should probably throw in here that DH and I are trying to lose weight and doing a pretty good job so I am afraid a restaurant would work against us. I was planning to bring pre-cooked spaghetti to heat up plus one other meal. We would eat out with the team one night and good friends who live in the area one night. One of my friends whose DS also plays on the team thinks I am being ridiculous to bring food. What do you think? If you agree-any food suggestions?

The person making you feel bad about your choices is not much of a friend IMO.

Not sure Spaghetti is all that healthy though. :flower3:

Do what you want. Maybe get pre-packaged salads if you want something healthy.

Personally I would never bring food to heat up anyplace but if that is what you are into just do it and don't mind what anyone else says.

We try to eat the whole wheat pasta, and I will bring salad. DS likes to "carb up" the night before he plays so he prefers spaghetti for that. We are trying to eat in moderation and choose healthy as best we can.

Twice when money was tight I made sloppy joe meat and froze it in a large ziploc bag. It began to thaw during flight but made no mess. Nuke it, put it on buns (or the calorie conscious can just eat it off a paper plate), add bagged salad and you can call it a meal.

I'd take food if we wanted to tuck in and rest. But otoh, if my sin wanted to go out with friends I'd let him.

I've brought food with us before when staying at a hotel with a fridge & microwave. It isn't about being cheap it's about having things we want to eat.

I think you are smart. You are not only eating healthier than a restaurant meal but you are saving money too! I say go for it! You are still eating with the team and going out with a friend. You are doing the SMART thing!

I think it's a great idea. Sometimes "friends" can try to sabotage a weight loss or fiscal change in their friend. Be strong. I applaud you!

When our kids traveled for sports we always took food, sometimes our portable Thermos grill. Mom's would take turns figuring out how and what to bring. Concession stand food gets old really fast. Not to mention the cost of some of them!
Now that my kids are grown and we travel for business we/he still hit a grocery if there is a microwave/fridge. After 200 days a year in a hotel, restaurant food gets really old too! We actually go on vacation to eat some home cooked food.:rotfl2:
1 kid X 3 tournaments X 4kids (my # of kids) X 2 sports each at least. Not cheap or weird in my book!

I don't know how this tournament works but when ds played in out of town tournaments, I was way too tired when we got back to the hotel to think of re-heating anything or cooking anything. And we never knew how late it would be when we got back.

I would go with prepackaged salads or something we could just grab.

Great ideas and I would do the same. Sloppy joes and taco meat are others I have made to bring along. My family will also enjoy pb & j over fast food any day.

We always bring healthy snacks when we go out of town - fruit, trail mix, cheese sticks, yogurt...along with drinks. I also bring along some of the baby veggie pouches for DS3 because I know he won't always eat veggies while we are OOT. If we are going on a week long vacation I always make sure that I have a full kitchen (and prefer it for every trip, even a night or two) and we cook most of our meals in the hotel/condo/timeshare. I prefer to cook on vacation because our digestive systems can't handle a week of eating out. We make chicken and egg salad for sandwiches at lunch with fresh fruit and we cook things like shrimp and steak for dinner - easy but it still feels like a treat.

When we go out of town for 3 nights or less we always go out to eat for dinner. It's just such a hassle to bring food for a meal in the room. DH and I tend to split an entree and order an extra side salad/side so we don't have to deal with leftovers. We always bring breakfast food if the hotel doesn't provide it for free and we tend to just eat a light, cheap lunch. I would prefer to get Subway over bringing spaghetti for dinner. You can bring chips from home or eat fruit as a side - 3 footlongs would only cost $15 and I know I can't eat more than a 6". They also have salads if you want to avoid the bread.

I don't think bringing spaghetti or food is necessarily cheap - I just think it sounds like more trouble than it's worth.

I dont think its ridiculous to bring food, but I wouldn't bring things I had to heat up unless there was an actual kitchenette with a sink to do the clean-up in. That is just me though, if you have no problems heating and eating a spaghetti dinner who cares what your friend thinks. Do what works for you :thumbsup2

I don't think it's weird or too cheap at all! I understand about bringing spaghetti- it's good carbs for playing baseball and it is very cheap! My friend eats pasta a few nights a week b/c it's so cheap, lol. I can only take it 1x a week- prefer a bagel a day as my "Big carb" meal. :)

It's so easy to bring breakfast and snacks, everyone should think about it!! I think lunch and dinner is a gray zone. If you want to do it, great, if you don
t, also great!

We go to soccer tournaments a lot and 1/2 the fun is going out to eat with the other families after the games. I'd skip the concession stands at the games and bring your "home food" then. Lots of folks bring sandwiches, fruit, cut-up veggies, snacks like crackers (whole grain), even things like yogurt... You can save $$ and calories during the day and then have fun socializing with the team in the evening. At the restaurants, just go with a side salad or a light appetizer. Honestly, I don't pay much attention to what other families order (except I usually don't let my kids order soda and usually steer them to the children's menu when we are on our own and with others, they tend to order "bigger").

Not weird at all! I won a trip once to an indoor water park. It was 2 nights/3 days and included 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner. I was out of work at the time so money was tight. I took Chef Boyardee, cold cuts, pasta salad, chips, cereal, milk, Kool-Aid and sloppy joes and buns with us to eat in the room. I warmed stuff in the microwave and we spent $0 out of pocket for the entire trip!

Stick with your plan!

I totally feel you on the losing weight thing! I recently travelled to New York and went grocery shopping right away to make sure I could have what I wanted and was healthy to eat.

When someone is giving you a hard time about something like bringing food, remember it says more about them than it does about you. Do what you need to do to eat healthy and happy! :)

If it were up to me, I would personally do a pasta salad with maybe some chicken or maybe some cheese. I suggest that because it's good cold and cuts down on prep. :) Plus it needs to sit a while to get yummy.
