DO you think this can work at school?

I have a TMX ELmo that we have no need for. I want to donate it to school and have a raffle with all proceeds going to the schools' adopted families. Each year our little school adopts 3 families and we pretty much cover the entire Christmas, from food, clothing, toys an diapers. Each person who volunteers gets specific things to buy. Like this year I have to get sz4 diapers, pink & white scarf set, and a Diego Rescue truck.

So my thoughts are if they have a raffle we could split the donations and get each family a GC for the food store?

I do not want to call the principal if it sounds lame ;) or illegal

Any thoughts?

Sounds like a good idea to me! We've done something similar in the past in my school (Catholic private). It's a great way to raise some funds for a needy family! As far as I know, there's nothing illegal about it since the item is donated and the money is going to the needy families. Both sides win -- one side gets a shot at a TMX Elmo and the other side gets a nice grocery store gift cert. to make their holidays happier. It's not like you're auctioning it off at school only to keep the money for yourself -- that would be called Ebay.

ETA -- you could sell individual tickets for $1.00 and an arms length for $5.

I think that is a great idea! I don't think it would be illegal but you may want to ask your local gaming board. Around here, if you expect to raise over $500 in a raffle you need a gaming license. Good luck!

Hmmmm ... interesting! Since the school isn't profiting from the money, soI wonder if that would hold true?? I mean, sure, you're fundraising via a raffle (gambling), but w/the money going to someone other than the school, does this still apply. Def. find out about that, OP!

Also ... if your school runs Bingo, then you could go under their gaming license! That's what they do at DS's school.

I know in mass you only need a gaming license if the prize is over $1000 or the tickets are over $10 a peice....

Ok I will sak her Monday. I do not expect the tix to be over 10.00 so we should be set.

That is an awesome idea! :goodvibes

I would suggest selling the tickets for $1 a piece. That way if someone wants 10, they can spend $10 (or maybe you could do ten for $9 to entice - or is that not fair?), but if someone doesn't want to spend $10, they may still give you $5.
