Do you think fish tanks/aquariums are tacky?

Not saltwater unfortunately. The fish DH wants for his birthday is $100 :earseek:

Yes, they aren't cheap at all. :earseek:

I really like them--ds and dd both have tanks in their bedrooms, very calming.
We also have atarted putting them in our classrooms at school---personally I don't think they are tacky at all.

Honestly unless they have beautifull high end cabnitry, I tend to think they are something more appropriate for a waiting room, than in a home. I would never have one. But this is my very personal opinon!!!!!!!

Just a suggestion; if I were you, I'd worry a lot less about how things look and a lot more about just enjoying the little things in life, even if some of those little things make you feel tacky. Which, by the way, in no way is a well loved fish tank a tacky object to have in your home. I don't own any myself, but I think they are beautiful.

I do what I want with my home and money and find it odd that some people don't. I don't live my life to impress others. I have raised snakes, iguanas, turtles, frogs and even a tarantula. And the huge handmade wooden cages I made for my iguanas must have looked unsightly as hell to some people. But these things made me happy! Had anybody dared come into my home and suggest I was tacky because of my hobby, I would have personally shown that person to the door, laughed at their snobbiness, and encouraged that they take the stick out of their rump before giving them the final shove off my property. Life is way too short to not engage in any hobby or interest that makes you happy and especially, life is too short to worry about appearances. But that is just an opinion.

Amen!

no way yuck. I find them to be very calming. I love stareing at the fish gracefully swimming around the tank.

Wow Cass! Thanks for sharing the pictures!!! Saltwater tanks sure are gorgeous!

Dackota Lynn, Love your attitude! I wish I was more like you. One of my hobbies is decorating and I've got hours and lots of hard work invested in sewing, painting, refinishing, replacing hardware, light fixtures, etc. plus I'll admit that I'm somewhat of a neat freak, so this big glass box with water in it is going to definitely have to stay clean and somehow coordinate, LOL. I think I'm going to start shopping for something like a big cool clunky antique sideboard to set it on first, since I can't afford anything high end....Chicago said it, expensive home for some cheap fish, LOL.

Thank you all so much for your opinions. The expert friend who gave ds the 20 gallon tank is coming back into town next month, and he said he'd help us pick one out and set it up. He's trying to talk me into putting a honking one smack dab in the middle of the living room, "cringe", LOL, but I'll post pictures.

Thanks again and I'd love to see more pics!!!

oh and I'm off to find a picture of a mickey mouse fish.

found it, a platy, something I think I can keep alive...

No more tacky than the stuff associateded with other pets. We have large fresh water tanks.

We also have a cat post, doesn't exactly make the room. :goodvibes

I know a local diver that has a huge salt water tank and everything in it is stuff he actually got himself. Very cool.

My brother has a custom made one and people go out of their way to see it. Yuck certainly isn't anything anyone would say. He spends alot of time and money though and it is very impressive. Really depends on what you put into it.

edited to add a picture, not sure if it will work. The tank is 415 gallons.

And that is a $10,000+ tank right there! ( including everything ).... a real beauty! :)

Thanks for posting the saltwater tank pics :)
DH is a regular lurker at reefcentral.com and is so inspired by the tank photos people have posted. Unfortunately the inspiration means $$$$ for us ;) We're just starting our saltwater tank so we just have 2 mollies and a gobi while we work on establishing the cycle and DH builds a hood for the special coral light.
