I am picking up a pattern and material for DD tommorow and I need your help! I am sewing the Sleeping Beauty dress. What size to buy for her? She is a very petite 5 year old. Wears 5's and occasional 4's and 6's depending on manufacturer. But, when I measure her for the pattern, the size comes up to a 3 except for the back-neck length. We will wear it in WDW and probably have a turtleneck or other shirt under it so she can be warmer. here is a link to the pattern page, and here are her measurements. Last year I made a simplicity pattern of 4 for her, and I made the seam allowances generous as I thought it might be too small, but it fit ok. I am thinking of a 6, so she can wear the heavier stuff under and she can have it for a while. her cinderella Disney store dress is a 6x. HELP! (and I am not that advanced that I can alter the pattern)

Chest 22
Waist 20
Hips 23
back-neck to waist 10
height 40 1/2 in.

Wow! The dress will be gorgeous!!!

Hmmm... It looks like the 6 will be pretty big, so she'd certainly have room to grow and to wear a layer underneath.

It looks like the 4 would be the "proper" fit, so you just need to decide how much extra room you want to build in.

The length is easy to adjust, the waist medium/easy to take in, the chest and shoulders more of an expert adjustment.

I think the 5 or the 6 would work- and take LOTS of pictures! (You're such a good mom! :D What a lucky little girl! )

Thanks Kathy! I think I will go with the 5. Can't wait to get started!!! And yes, I'll send you some pics!:)

PRINCESS VIJA, do you mind if I hijack your thread to ask a related question? I am making my DD the infant/toddler version of the Snow White dress. I am using "costume satin" for the material. Should I wash it first or just press it?

Thanks!

PRINCESS VIJA, the Sleeping Beauty costume is adorable. I'm sure your DD with look great.

tmfranlk, you should always do to the fabric whatever you're going to do to the finished garment before you sew it. This means dry clean or hand wash or machine wash.
(I work at a fabric store, so I get this question a lot.)

So when you get it home just do a double check on the back panel of the top as to which size you will want to use. Remember to have her wear what it is that she will be wearing underneath so that she won't feel uncomfortable.

And yes always pre-treat your materials before you start to sew.

Can't wait to see pictures!

Good luck and Happy Sewing!
