Do you separate bananas from the bunch to keep them from ripening so fast?

I'd be very interesting in knowing if this or anything works to slow down the ripening. I got seriously sick of throwing away bananas so I started tossing them in the freezer (unpeeled) last June. By the time I started my Christmas baking I had enough bananas to make 22 batches of banana bread! It was gross peeling the bananas because they'd turned to mush but the banana bread was delicious.

22 batches of banana bread! That's a good idea for using ripe banans. That's got to be a record! I am packing an early supper for an appointment in the city, and I'd like to have a yellow banana to eat.

We don't buy a lot of bananas, but having an overripe one left over to make a loaf of banana bread is always part of the reason we buy bananas.

No, we just eat them before they go bad and freeze them if we won't get to them in time. Sometimes I buy extras on purpose so that we'll have some to freeze for smoothies.

I've heard of separating them, but we tend to buy around 15 bananas at a time. I can't imagine where I'd keep them all if I had to spread them out.

I've never heard of that before. But I only buy 2-3 bananas at a time, not a whole big bunch, so they rarely go bad. I like them "just yellow" and DH likes them to the point where I would consider them to be "past their prime."

I also wrap the whole end stem with plastic, it does slow down the 'going bad too fast' process as far as I'm concerned

I wrap the stem with either plastic wrap or aluminum foil. It works great. I've had them keep for about 2 weeks doing that.

I have never heard of doing that. In our house a bunch will disappear in two days or will sit and get over ripe. There is no in between.

To skip the gross factor of having to peel frozen bananas I peel them, slice them into two inch chunks, lay them flat on a cookie sheet and then put them in the big freezer for an hour. Then I just toss them in a freezer bag and put the bag in the freezer. I'll also count how many slices make up a banana and make a note of it so I know how many I need for a recipe.

Never heard of that, I'm going to try it. I always separate them and yes it does work. Sometimes my kids eat them as soon as I bring them home and other times they sit.

I just throw them in the freezer skins and all. We will also use overly ripe bananas for smoothies.

The first thing my MIL does when she buys bananas is separates them all and place them around the kitchen... she swears by it..

We hang ours, bunched. Nothing on the stems. Works pretty well.

Yes! I've had success with the saran wrap on the separated bananas' stem. It's been a few days and there is still green coloring at the top of the bananas. I don't have to carry a bag supper to Vancouver tomorrow after all, but the bananas would have been usuable. I do love when the bananas just turn yellow.

I don't separate them but I do put them in solitary. LOL

The bunch of bananas is not kept anywhere near other fruits or potatoes/onions. The gas from them will speed up the ripening of the bananas.

I eat some, but some I will put by the other produce so that they will over ripen and I can freeze them for smoothies. Once they turn black and brown they sweeten up and you don't need to add sugar or honey to your smoothies.
