This reminded me of a memory of my 1st visit to WDW. Our first ride on HM we were just to the doors of the mansion and the CMs slammed the doors in our face. My aunt was soooo miffed, till my Mom explained it was part of the "act". She gets it now, :lmao:.

But that wasn't it - I remember my first ride in the stretching room and it got all dark and I saw the noose and I was just glued to my Mom's side. When it went dark I remember I asked her "Can I scream?" cuz I was just scared enuff and her answer was perfect. "Of course, if you feel like you need too." And I did. A little one. And I felt better for it too. After that and to this day, it is my favorite ride. I don't remember much else from that trip it was so long ago, but that is crystal clear.

:hippie:

I don't scream, and I wish other people wouldn't. Even with no kid around, a piercing shriek in your ear sounds a lot louder to you than it does to the shrieker, and can be physically painful.

I also wish other people wouldn't talk along with the narration. Even if you've been on the ride 100 times, and think it makes it more fun, there's someone in that room who has never been on it, and they came for the ride, not to hear your version of it. Same for screaming during the ride, which is often loud enough to drown out the in-buggy narration along with the sound effects for the scene.

That said, physically assaulting someone else for being non-physically rude is sort of like smacking your kid while yelling "That'll teach you not to hit people!"

I don't scream and whileI don't think it's a big deal when someone screams during that particular part of the ride, it's still kind of annoying. Especially if it happens in my ear. When that room is packed and your standing on top of someone I think it's a little rude. And I agree with other posters that for some people this is their first time riding and that does ruin the whole atmosphere when people are screaming and reciting lines. I've been on HM before when there were a group of kids screaming non-stop throughout the entire ride ( to be funny) and I think that's pretty rude.

I think there is a big difference between reciting lines and screaming. People reciting the lines may annoy me.

Oh, now I can answer my 13 yr old son with Asperger's... Everytime he has gone on this, he asks and asks and asks me why people scream in there.... Honestly, this has become his favorite ride BUT he does hate the screaming - it's a noise issue for him.. But, now that I can tell him that it is on the soundtrack and people scream to add fun- I think he will accept that and understand it better.. Also, he will realize that he may want to put his headphones on before we get there if he knows that people will probably scream in there as it is part of the show ( He's 13 and well Mommy doesnt make sense all the time to him ya know- autistic or not) He thought people were screaming "just to annoy him."LOL ( If you have an asperger's child or know one you will probably get that chuckle). Ofcourse, I still cant explain to him why people break the rules and take flash pictures in there so if you see/hear a 13 yr old going on and on about all the rude people taking pictures, it's probably us.. But, maybe he will now stop going on and on about all the rude people who scream in the stretching room..

And I would be the 49 y/o woman going on and on about people using flash pictures when they were told not to. I am completely 100% in line with your son on that one!

It used to not bother me but that was before i had my DS. My DH and I took him on HM for the first time last september and while in that room i was trying to occupy him so he would be paying attention and these group of teenage girls screm like crazy and made my DH2 cry.:sad1: My DS grabbed on to me for dear life until we were out of that room. I wish that people would just watch to see if there are little kids on this part of the ride before they did this. My DS loved the rest of the ride, i just hope this year he doesnt remember that room.

I dont scream...its not my style!:cool2: But I dont mind if others do, I understand, its all in fun!

I am literally shocked that people think it is rude to scream on HM. I mean, it is a haunted house, the whole point is to scare you and your kids.

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Reminds of the people who get in a pool and get upset when kids splash them.:confused3

i don't scream, and have no problem with others screaming...but on our last trip we were with a group of teens (on both HM and ToT) who would give ear piercing shrieks the entire ride (on both rides) then laugh hystarically in between. it completely ruined the ride for both BF and myself :sad2::sad1:

I do a fake scream but never loud enough to disrupt others. I never scream during the ride but last trip there were teens who screamed throughout the ride.

The constant screaming does annoy me. I like to sit back and enjoy the ride, and look at all the details that Disney put into it! The line quoting is obnoxious too.

This is one of the differences between DL and WDW. At DL you can count on extremely loud shrieking - so much so that I always plug my ears. Out of habit I plug them at WDW, but often there's no reason to.

I don't scream, but I know others are going to do it!
The very first time our youngest went on HM (and btw it was only recently- no way would I have even TRIED to take her on it at age 3! She was 8 the first time! at age 3 she was scared of Snow White ride for crying out loud!)

AND EVEN THEN- at her age- being her first time and knowing the ride wouldn't scare her but the darkness and screaming might- we prepared ourselves. I told her to close her eyes and I held my hands over her ears and hugged her so she wouldn't be scared and wouldn't hear it as loudly... she tensed up a bit when the screaming happened but was fine after that and liked the ride.

Those people never should have taken a 3yr old on the ride- especially if they themselves have never rode it and had no idea what they were bringing their daughter in. I mean it is a HAUNTED mansion ride- only a moron would think that it's not going to be scary- especially for a young child! I mean come on- they can't feign surprise about it. :(

I'm glad I read this thread because it will help me prepare DS for it (it's been about 5 years since I've ridden it). I've been talking to him about some "pretend scary" things and "funny pretend ghosts" we might see, and now I can warn him about people "pretend screaming" as well. It's one thing to know a ride is going to have some scary/pretend elements to it and prepare a child for it; it's a different thing for that child to see real people seemingly reacting in terror.

Regardless, there's never any excuse for assault and I'm glad that everyone involved in the original incident is ok.

When my kids were younger, it really bothered them when someone screamed. That gives me two good reasons not to scream myself...
1) I wish to be considerate and not scare little kids
2) It's not exactly the most original thing to do. KWIM?

I don't scream, but I do not have a problem with those who do. I read your other thread and I can't believe that woman and her husband - what terrible people  It's not a big deal - a lot of people scream and most children are scared by the lights going out, not by the screaming.

I don't scream, and I don't mind if others do it at all. :confused3
It would be a riot to find a big sign before the stretching room that read:
"Please no screaming, we know this is a haunted mansion, but geez!"
It is supposed to be a scary ride, it is cheesy, it is fun, so IMHO have at it!

It sounds as if you prepare your son for the sound. Ear plugs are also a good idea for children that are sensetive to loud sounds. It is a shame the incident could have been prevented on both sides. With preparation on one party and the other party making the suggestion. No matter what there is no need for anyone to get physical with another human being.

We travel often with a child that has autistic traits and another who is extremely sensitive to noise. The one that has issues with noise is very very sensitive, so we always have earplugs ready, she has been this way since she was a baby, so we are all aware, ready and never ever had problems.

She even jokingly screamed in the stretching room last time and we all thought that was an awesome breakthrough!

There is a fine line between a funny scream and a blood curdling scream that peels paint off the walls.

I was in that room and this teenage girl had a healthy set of lungs! My ears were ringing the entire rest of the ride :scared1:

So a joking funny We are all going to Die kind of yell adds to the fun ~ screeching until ears bleed ~ not so much!

I have screamed on HM once. My Brother knew the exact point in the ride where you can grab the person in the doombuggy next to you :scared1: the SOB grabbed me so hard he left marks on my arm :rotfl2:
Yup I screamed and almost had to change my drawers after wards :rotfl2: Little brothers what can you do with them? :rolleyes1
