Which pronunciation makes you look smarter? That's the one everyone should use. :smooth:

I actually pronounce it "I'm going to Stop & Shop, do you need anything while I'm there??::yes::

Grosh-rees here.
As in I need to go Grosh-ree shopping.

If you live in the south, it is neither.

It's gross-reez

Yup that is pretty much my standard line too. I usually follow that line with. I will pay good money for some one else to go. I have to groshurie shop....it falls way down the list on things to do. Just after cleaning the cat box I think.

How can it have a "shur" sound when there's no h?

Well the word: sure isn't spelled shure but it is still pronounced as if it has an sh sound.

I looked it up in Meeriam-Webster online and it gives these pronunciations:
Pronunciation: 'grOs-rE, 'grO-s&-; 'grOsh-rE

I say grOsh-rE and I'm a native Texan.

I guess I must not pay very close attention because I don't think I've ever noticed anyone say it without a sh!

I have never in my life heard it pronounced groshuries, here is grosiree. Usually I just say food shopping and the carts are called carts. I have never heard the term "trolley" for a shopping cart.

edited to remove comment that may have been insulting to some (I apologize)

Wow, I guess I'm insulted!

Oh goodness, please don't be, I didn't mean to insult anyone. I'm just trying to figure out if words are regional, if that makes sense.

okay I'm from MA also, but I think I say gro-sur-rees. lol.

my cousin is from MA also but moved to PA when she married a PA guy. Her kids tell me I say whata instead of water. is that true? I think they say werter.

Also, I've often wondered. Am I the only NE er who thinks movie stars must all have NE accents, because I don't think they say werter. Or do they??? Maybe a question for another thread. LOL
