Do you "sanitize" your room when you first get there?

I never did this when I was younger, but for some reason now I can't rest until I do a little cleaning upon arriving at a hotel. First, I go straight to the bathroom and use a Lysol or Clorox wipe on the flush handle of the toilet. Sorry, but it is so gross to think what might be on there!! I also wipe the faucet handles at the sink, the light switch, and the door knob inside the bathroom. I then spray Lysol into the tub, and then remove the comforters from the beds.

I also can't stand walking around a hotel room barefoot! I have seen too many things in hotel rooms (including blood on doors and walls on two separate occasions) to not do a little "sprucing up" upon arrival. I will say the Disney hotels are, for the most part, cleaner than most, but still we have found lots of interesting stuff on the carpet right next to the bed! I guess no one thinks to vacuum there.

Other than the things I've mentioned, I pretty much leave it as is, hoping that housekeeping has done their best to get rid of any icky stuff! So, am I the only "nut"? Oh, and does anyone remember that horrible story about the baby that found a used "prophylactic" on a hotel room floor and put it in his mouth???? I would have had an instant stroke if that happened to my child!!!

Nope, I don't do a thing but unpack!

heck I don't even do that unless we are staying at the same resort the entire trip!

I've been to Disney...what...8 times since 1999...haven't gotten sick due to an "unsanitized" room.

I even sleep in the sheets...with the quilt/comforter over me.

I take a close look around--under the beds, etc.--and make sure there is nothing obviously gross.
Once at a (non-Disney) hotel we had just gotten into the room and my toddler went into the bathroom and came out carrying a long piece of dental floss saying, "Look Mommy, yucky!" Ugh. So now I look over everything immediately. I do wipe down the fixtures on the sink and toilet and I usually put the remote control into a ziplock bag. That's it. :)

OMG...I knew there were more like me "out there"!!

When we walk into the room, I immediately unpack my Lysol spray and Lysol wipes. I wipe down everything and spray the beds. I give the bathroom a good cleaning because they're never really that clean to begin with (especially the tub - eww).

If we stay at OKW, I strip the beds completely and put my own sheets on from home (after giving the bed a good Lysol spraying!). I wipe out the refrigerator as well.

Ok, maybe I'm a little nuts, but I feel better if I know the place is clean!

Yikes! To each their own I guess...

I'll pull the comforters off of the bed, and usually I keep my socks on instead of walking barefoot, but that's about it. I'm not dead yet... :teeth:

Only thing in this line I do is spray Lysol all over everything. Most because they spray with a kinda room deodorizer than I'm allergic to and lysol seems to knock it out on contact, So I always get a can right away and start spraying. If I sanitize at the same time, I guess that's a good thing? But it didn't start out that way. Lysol spray does not bother my allergies / asthma so I use it alot.

If it makes you more comfortable, I say do it. So what, it probably takes only a few minutes, and if it makes your mind at ease go for it. :wizard:

Yes! I'm a "clean freak" too! I do all the same things (lysol everything, wipe all down, etc.)

I have a funny story....Year before last we went on a quick overnight trip with my Mom and stayed in a hotel. My Mom went in and was sitting on the bed with the comforter still on it (I always remove this first thing!) My, then two 1/2 yr old dd said to my Mom, "Gigi, that is gross! Don't you know they hardly ever clean those!" :rotfl:

My poor DH, now he has to deal with two of us! Who knows what my younger DD will be like when she is old enough to talk! :)

I saw a Today segment on hotel room cleanliness that said the filthiest things in the room were the remote, comforters, carpet and bathtub! He said to wear socks instead of going barefoot! We usually start out doing this but by the end of the trip we're all barefoot again. Socks are the last thing I want on my feet after a hot day at the parks! I give everything a good Lysol spraying!

Heck no. I barely "sanitize" my home.

:rotfl2:

I have never worried about picking up germs in a hotel. I walk barefoot, take tub baths, lay on top of the comforter, sleep between the sheets, and drink out of the glasses. I like to walk on the wild side! :dancer:

OMG-You're on vaccation. Live a little and take some chances! And have fun!

i use to work in a hotel cleaning rooms and the things i have seen that human beings do. especially on the bed linen. i call that the tracks of my tears. :cool1: people who clean just touch up,especially if its the end of the day and you are tired . the corners i have cut and i am ashamed to admit it. : :sad2: so no i inspect the room ,will not sleep under the covers or the bedspread. i will sleep on top of the blanket. now i bring lysol to clean every surface. if hospitals allow very little cleaning to be done then the hotels will get even less. there are good mousekeepers out there but the stress of getting it done with less help makes for bad results. so if i were you inspect everything and do wipe anything you and your family are going to touch. : but most of all have a great time. :wave2:

You're 100% right. I wish I could just relax and fight the urge to clean those rooms, but then the "heebie jeebies" take over and, well, that's it.......gotta clean.

But the good part is that, once I clean up, it's all enjoyment from that point on. :dancer:

Um, I know that was a typo, but perhaps you were thinking "vaccination" instead of "vacation" when you typed that? :rotfl2:

The remote control gets cleaned with a clorox type wipe first. It is disgusting the dirt that comes off of them! The phone is next. Then the bathroom fixtures. Our hands are the biggest carriers of germs, so I focus more on things people touch. I don't worry too much about the linens or carpet. This takes all of five minutes, and if it makes me feel better, so be it. :)

The lysol wipes and lysol spray on every surface is a must!!! The remote is disgusting and After two former trips where I had to be admitted to Celebration Hospital becasue of dehydration (if you know what I mean) I have been doing this ritual of spraying and wiping down every surface, and I have not ever gotten sick like that ever again, but also we carry anti-baterial wipes and hand gel and immediately before we eat we clean our hands, and then if we need to pick up the nasty ketchup bottle or salt & pepper we pick them up with a napkin wrapped around it. Sounds crazy I know, but I have not gotten sick on vacation, or for that matter nothing more than a slight head cold in years. you can never be to careful.

go girl smart move. if i was staying in a place that had a washer dryer i would also take all linen off bed and towels and wash them just to be sure. plus clean all surfaces. after all you don't know if the person before you was sick or not . never hurts to be cautious. :

So do you "supercleaners" wipe down restaurant seats, armrests/bars/handles on rides or other places 10's of thousands of people touch in one day?
