Do you "sanitize" your room when you first get there?

I was going to ask the same thing about public bathrooms, door handles, elevator buttons, etc. There was also a study done that showed most people's computer keyboards had more bacteria on them than their toilet seats. Being exposed to germs actually builds up your immune system. Too much "sanitizing" and you'll actually get sicker easier. You're more likely to get food poisoning in a restaurant than catch something from a hotel room.

I clean EVERYTHING!!! I pack a couple canisters of Clorox Wipes (God Bless the person who invented these!!) and clean the following:

Bathroom - toilet, sink, shower, floor, doorknobs
Telephone
Remote Control (and then I use a tissue to even use it!)
Light Switches
Doorknobs
Curtain Rods

Plus I NEVER sit on the bed cover - those things are only occasionaly washed. Plus socks at all times. I not only saw the "Today" show, but also a show on "20/20" where they did black-light scans and found semen and urine on the WALLS and on the BEDSPREADS!!!!!!!

I can also get in and out of a bathroom without touching anything. AND I think people who don't wash their hands after using the bathroom should be arrested! Ladies, rinsing them off with just water doesn't cut it.

My DW leaves the room MUCH cleaner than when we checked in. Believe me, if she could shampoo the carpet, she would do that too. :rotfl2:

So do you "supercleaners" wipe down restaurant seats, armrests/bars/handles on rides or other places 10's of thousands of people touch in one day?

No. I think I clean the room mainly because we're sleeping & bathing in there. To me, a room is like a temporary home, and I despise a dirty home.

OMG...I knew there were more like me "out there"!!

When we walk into the room, I immediately unpack my Lysol spray and Lysol wipes. I wipe down everything and spray the beds. I give the bathroom a good cleaning because they're never really that clean to begin with (especially the tub - eww).

If we stay at OKW, I strip the beds completely and put my own sheets on from home (after giving the bed a good Lysol spraying!). I wipe out the refrigerator as well.

Ok, maybe I'm a little nuts, but I feel better if I know the place is clean!

I thought I was the only one who brought my own sheets from home :rotfl2:

We started doing that after I read on these boards about some poor girl who stayed at a Disney hotel and got bed bugs really bad. It took months for her to get better! That grossed me out SO bad :sad2:

Plus, as an added benefit, they are WAY more comfortable! ;)

We also wipe down the remote and bathroom fixtures :teeth:

ahhhh....the fear put into us all via the media!
I don't clean a thing when I go to a hotel/resort...I figure I have as much chance catching the bacteria/germs before I even get to my room via the elevator, etc. Heck for that matter...the doorknob going into my room probably has any "infectious" germs on it that would still be in the room. I surely won't get a lysol can out to spray that before I enter....
btw..anyone ever watch "Monk"? :teeth:

OMG.....did I write this thread?????? ;)

I was thinking the same thing. And I'm not nearly as bad as my DD who does wipe off faucets in public bathrooms, door handles, tableware in restaurants, never drinks from glasses in public establishments and never goes anywhere without purell and lysol. She absolutely was going to wipe down handles on the rides but her DH put his foot down so she settled on washing her own hands each time with the purell. A clean hotel room is a must with me. I have no problem with Disney hotels but I'd rather feel safe knowing things we will touch have been sanitized by me. I have seen some mighty gross things in hotel rooms.

It can be a slippery slope. We all hope to get the room after one of you guys have stayed in it!

Have you seen those reports on swimming pools and spas?

Omg......I just had a stroke reading about the baby and the used proprophylactic :earseek: Was this a Disney hotel?? Omg... I am nausous now. :crazy2:

Anyhow, I was never really a disinfecting nut until my mom and dad started traveling with us. She used to work for a local hotel as a cleaning lady when I was little so she's seen it all. She brings everything under the sun to clean and disinfect with. She even travels with her own sheets and bedspread....LOL I started borrowing her cleaning supplies upon arrival and wiping and spraying down the bathroom. I don't go as far as to pack my own bedding though. I do give a thorough check of the sheets and bedspreads.

A really good friend of mine used to work in a hotel in housekeeping and every time we have stayed anywhere the 1st thing she does is pull back all the blankets to make sure the sheets have ben changed then she checks the bathroom. For me I wipe things down and flip the comforters at least there is a sheet in between us , with my DD9 who has asthma she is also taking meds that compromise her Immune system and make her more susceptible to infections, DD10 has Kidney problems and she definitely does no need any thing to put stress on her body. All of my children have learned to open and shut the bathroom door with their elbows and to use tissue when flushing the toilet. But at the same time all of them when they were younger had no problem picking stuff off the floor and eating it. I htink school exposes them to plenty of germs. To each his own on what they do . Oh as a side note when hubby and I had to go to Indiana to see my mom in the hospital we stayed at a hotel and walked around in our socks and the bottom of them came out black!!!!!!!!!! So gross :earboy2: :earboy2:

I can't believe the number of posters that are so afraid of germs. As another poster said being exposed to germs HELPS your immune system. I'm glad I haven't developed this phobia.

The only thing I do is unpack, and I'm still alive too!

I always check the sheets too. We stayed at a Holiday Inn years ago and when we pulled down the blankets, there was shredded cheese on the sheets! I am concerned/paranoid that housekeeping won't change the sheets between guests. As far as comforters go...yuck. I've been tempted to ask for a freshly laundered comforter/bed spread in the past. Has anyone ever done this?
When my DS was 6 months old, he got Salmonella poisoning. They contact the health dept when there is a case, apparently. We were in the middle of a move from New York to Oklahoma, so both states were involved...anyway, finally was determined that the most likely place he got it was from crawling on the floor or put things in his mouth at the hotel in New York. He was ill for over 6 months. I feel justified in being a hotel germ phobe! :Pinkbounc
BTW, we have a grocery chain that has sanitizing wipes to use on your cart as you walk in. They have the same wipes in the meat dept. I LOVE it.

I have never worried about picking up germs in a hotel. I walk barefoot, take tub baths, lay on top of the comforter, sleep between the sheets, and drink out of the glasses. I like to walk on the wild side! :dancer:

Waste valuable disney time cleaning? I don't think so. And I'm not contributing to the next generation of "super bugs" either..........
But I do make sure I wash my hands after bathroom and before eating and keep them away from my face at other times.

I don't go as far as sanitizing the room but the first thing I do is take the comforter off and I don't walk barefoot on the carpet either. I also make sure when I shower that I lay towels on the floor for when I come out so my feet don't touch the bare floor.

We live dangerously! I do bring clorox wipes with me but they are in case my kids make a mess. We've all stayed pretty healthy and haven't had any bad illnesses while we were down there. I do check under the beds now since I found a Pez dispenser in our room at GF this stay - none of my kids brought pez dispensers so I knew they were left over from someone else.
