Do you remember how much math was the absolute minimum you needed to graduate when

I graduated high school 10 years ago. We graduate high school in grade 11 and then do a 2 year pre-college, before 3 years of university.

I don't remember all the requirements, and I think they were different in regards to just to graduate high school, as opposed to going on to pre-college. You needed a certain number of credits, of which at least half I think were to be from grade 11.

What I can remember is that you needed grade 10 history, grade 10 science, either grade 10 advanced math or grade 11 regular math. You also needed English and French grade 11 credits.

Where do you live?

Was this a public school or private?

I graduated in 1977. Two years of math were required, two years of science, four years of history, four years of english and four years of religion.

I'm a senior in high school right now. We need 4 years of math to graduate :sad2: 4 years of english, 3 of science, 3 of social studies.

Class of '76 and we needed 4 years of both Math and English, 3 of science, chemistry, 3 social sciences, 2 phys ed, plus 4 years of electives- foreign language, home economics, band, fine arts, etc.

Really? I got in to a Tier 1 college with only 2.

My guess is that I am older than you are though.....;)

Dawn

Nope...I beat you. 1972....CA.
We had summer school classes that were offered also, so there were more options.
Some people (DH for one) took 5 years. He had to ride his bike to the University to take Calculus. It was offered in high schools back then.

we needed:

4 Enlglish (English 9,10,11 and 12)
4 math (Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Trig/Math Analysis OR Precalculus)
3 Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics OR Geosystems)
3 Foreign Language
4 Social Science (World History 1 and 2, US History and US Government)
2 PE (9th and 10th)
1 Fine Arts

I graduated in 2007

At my school it was 3 years required

9th- Algebra
10th- geometry
11th- precalc/trig
12th- Algebra II

that's what I took. For those taking only 3 years they did algebra, geometry, business math

I graduated in 1996

Sounds just like where I went! Northern VA here, how about you?

I'm a senior in HS this year.

I need 4 math, 3 science (4 recommended for college), 3 social studies (4 recommended for college), 4 english, 2 foreign language (at least 3 recommended for college), 1 fine arts credit (choir, band, etc), 1 gym credit, and 8 electives.

1 gym credit? Thats pretty interesting. Gym is priortity yearly every year to graduate.

4 credits in English (1 credit per grade)*
3 credits in mathematics (1 credit in Grade 11 or 12)
2 credits in science
1 credit in Canadian history
1 credit in Canadian geography
1 credit in the arts
1 credit in health and physical education
1 credit in French as a second language
0.5 credit in career studies
0.5 credit in civics
Plus one credit from each of the following groups:

1 additional credit (group 1): additional credit in English, or French as a second language,** or a Native language, or a classical or an international language, or social sciences and the humanities, or Canadian and world studies, or guidance and career education, or cooperative education***
1 additional credit (group 2): additional credit in health and physical education, or the arts, or business studies, or French as a second language,** or cooperative education***
1 additional credit (group 3): additional credit in science (Grade 11 or 12), or technological education, or French as a second language,** or computer studies, or cooperative education***

For group 1 I did german, group 2 I did French as a second language (I was in immersion) and I computer engineering for group 3 (we built robots which required ALOT of physics and math)

So I ended up doing almost every math available at the upper level (geometry and discretes mathmatics, data management and probability and calculus) My high school had 350 students so options were limited. I didn't need grade 12 math for university but many required it outside of provincial requirements. Math is pretty useful I use alot of my math still (though not helpful towards the English's masters I am working on LOL)

I took Algebra in 8th grade. Then it was Geometry, Algebra 2, Trig and Elementary Analysis (kind of a precursor to Calculus). I needed a lot of math since I was going into a technical field but 2 years was the minimum.

DS is now taking Pre-Calculus and it's his fourth year of math. His school only requires a minimum of 2 years but pushes 4 if you plan to go to college.

When I was in high school, 3 years of math were required. I took Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry.

I'm in college now and I had to have three hours of math for my major. I took Math 1010. It was mostly pre-algebra concepts.

I graduated in 1972, College Prep Course and 2 years of Math, Algebra & Geometry and 2 years of Science, General & Biology, 2 History- US and something else , 4 English, 4 PE, 2 years of a language(I took Spanish)

I only remember algebra 1 and geomatry, I may of had pre algebra as well. I rocked at geomatry and got A's easily. Algebra was a whole other story. I ended up in a private school whyere I met with teachers one on one twice a week. My algebra teacher there had endless patience and got me through it FINALLY with a B. I worked my butt off for that grade. The stupid part was I had to take PE other plaes then the school then get it approved by the district. I got all my credits and got I think e3.87 GPA and never bothered to walk or go to the districk office to get my Pe credits approved. It just dawned on me recently that to get my diploma from them now I may have to take more high school tests and this Ca state exam. While I used to be pretty bright my mind is mush after being a stay at home mom for so long. I also didn't have to take foreign language or Chemistry like they do now.

My oldest son got great grades in Algebra 1 in Jr high and took the placement test for his private school and didn't get a high enough score so he had to retake it freshman year, He said they were testing him on stuff he had never been taught. He will graduate with only reachiang algebra 2 level..

My oldest DD got to skip pre algebra and go straight to algebra 1 in 7th. If things go as expected this year she will start where her brother finished it in Algebra 2.
I have no flipping idea what calculus or triganometry even is.

The one science that I am drreading for my girls coming up is Chemistry. I hope it is easer at the public schools because at my sons private school it was a nightmare and he had to retake it in summer school. He told me the first week of school this is not going to end well.

What interesting to me is that now, with all the credits that are required, one of my dear relations has flunked 1 class. He can make up this class and still pass in 4 years. If he doesn't, he has to make it up on his own time and dime or spend 5 years in HS. That just seems. . .well. Guaranteed to produce drop outs.

Another dear relation is taking her 9th grade classes in the 8th grade. (She is very smart, but the truth is that her BFF is Wile E. Coyote, supergenius; and they just do everything together, including taking supergenius type classes.) As those classes don't count for "credits" but do count in the progression of classes, she won't be allowed to graduate in the 11th grade. Instead, somehow or other, she'll take college classes and then graduate with her grade. It doesn't make a ton of sense to me, but somehow or other, so long as she goes to a public school in Louisiana or a school that recognizes their credits, she will start college as a sophomore:confused3 (It's not AP classes, because the other dear relation is taking those.) I'm still wondering when Harry Hill will pop out of a train, because if this is true, why aren't more students taking advantage of it? I'm hoping it means the HS ships her off to one of the community college campuses her senior year, which would give her a good transition period between itsy small town life and college. We will see!

1 gym credit? Thats pretty interesting. Gym is priortity yearly every year to graduate.

Our high school has a requirement of 7 trimesters of PE-so basically freshman and sophomore year you take a full year of PE and then one more trimester either junior or senior year. That includes 2 trimesters of health and one trimester of drivers education/first aid/CPR (all one class). Our twins will take a study hall third trimester this year because of golf (only kids that are in sports are allowed study halls-taken 7th hour to minimize school time lost for games). They will have to take 2 trimesters of PE between junior and senior year now.
