Do you regularly use disposable plates?

Never. Not once in 35 years have we purchased disposable plates. Even when we used to do a lot of tent camping, we took real plates, silverware, etc.

We very seldom use paper plates because I don't like eating off of them. Before I had a dishwasher, we'd use them on weekends sometimes.

I do have a question though - if you have a dishwasher, how is using paper plates more convenient?

I use paper plates at work since I work 4 10hr shifts I am having my 3 meals a day in the office. I bring leftovers but don't want to use plastic containers in the microwave and it's too hard to clean stoneware/ceramic dishes with the papertowels/and soap available in the pantry. At home its rare, except for picnics or barbecues or when the kids have impromptu groups of friends over I'll tell them to use paper plates or bowls. We only run the dishwasher about 4 times a week so I don't mind the water usage over knowing we're keeping the landfills a little less filled.

I find it funny how a lot of people here that use real plates just can't seem to stand the fact that some of us use paper plates, I don't care that you think they are wasteful, what about all that energy and water that you use to wash the dishes. We are a family of 5, I use paper plates for some stuff and I still run the dishwasher at least 2 a day. Teenage boys will do that to you.

So in short, get over yourself real plate users, not one paper plate user has tried to convince you that you are in the wrong. Deal with it.

really? really? YOu can't figure that one out. Lets see, throw away, vs/ rinse, load, , unload and put away. Lets see that is 4 steps to 1 step. That is how it is more convenient.

YOu know what, it is fine if you( meaning as in general public) want to use real plates, but why is it so bothersome that some of us don't. I live in FLorida, we cook out all the time, we have pool parties and big bbq's, there is no way I am using real plates, no one that I know does. And trust me, my food sis really good too, that has nothing to do with it.

I will have to tell my son that his next PB7J deserves out fine china. He will get a kick out of that.

The only time I use paper plates is when we have a large bbq/party where there are more people than plates and also at birthday parties.

However, I will say that even hand-washing dishes or running the dishwasher has a negative effect on the environment. Water is a precious resource. When I lived in Georgia and we were in a drought, the news often ran segments about not rinsing your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher.

That said, I don't care for eating on paper plates, so I waste the water by running my dishwasher often.

We haven't used paper plates in a couple of years. We are a family of 8 and I run the dishwasher 2 times a day most days. Paper plates really wouldn't change it that much. And, when I thought about it, it seemed like a waste of money because we simply throw them away. We've drastically cut back on the amount of trash we throw away and we recycle much more. It is a conscious decision to have less waste.

Are we reading the same thread? I don't see anyone posting that they can't stand the fact that others use paper plates, or trying to convince anyone else to switch to regular plates.

Mentioning the reason you personally prefer real plates does not equate to trying to convince other people to do the same. If it does, I guess everyone who mentioned how big their family is, how many hours they work, or how many activities their kids are involved in, is also trying to convince regular plate users to switch to paper.

I voted BBQs and picnics, but it's pretty rare. We only use paper plates when we have parties with more people than plates. We wash dishes by hand 3X a day and I prefer it to using a dishwasher. For me, it's faster and my dishes are back in the cupboards before the next meal. Back when we had a dishwasher, they sat in there all the time and we were always searching for clean dishes.
Oh, and I feed 10 children Breakfast, Lunch and a Snack Monday through Friday. It would get crazy expensive to use paper plates for that many meals!

Yes, My hot dogs deserve a real plate. We love to entertain and have bbqs - but I would never think to use paper plates - I don't know anyone who would? I am a host and I like to set a pretty table. Tablecloths, candles, place mats, ect.

Nope. Waste of money and bad for the enviroment. Unless something really topsy-turvey is going on (new birth, death or serious illness, just moved in and still un-packing) no one in my extended family uses paper plates, even for parties.

I don't judge those that choose to do it, but I'll admit it does make me scratch my head a bit.

Maybe it is southern thang, but bbq's don't get fancy tablecloths, candles and such. Guess it is where you are from. no one I know would serve hotdogs on anything but a paper plate.

And you could ask yourself why would anyone care if I used paper plates, the only people with attitudes, until mine, are some of the people that don't use them.

Where I am from, you would be consider pretentious. But hey that is ok too. Live and let live. As long as you don't care about my paper, I don't care about your real plates for hot dogs.

AGain, the only touchy people until I spoke up are the people that don't use paper. Not all but a few got an attitude about using paper. I use it, my son did tonight for his sub sandwich. Sorry but I won't break out a plate for a sandwich. Funny he didn't seem to mind, and he was literally inhaling it. Now for my salad, yep a real plate.

FWIW, it isn't a herculean feat, until you have 5 people eating at different times, especially with sandwiches or pizza. I have more to do in my life than unload a dishwasher. I have stuff to do.
