Do you really dislike where you live?

To answer your question.....yes. However, we are stuck because DH and I both have decent jobs and the cost of living is fairly lower than other areas. I try to be grateful for what I have, but hate the thought that I may never live where my heart is at.

I dont like it here.. DH has 2 more years to retire and we plan on going more south.. thinking NC actually..

It's the city. We actually sold our original house here, which was HORRIBLE, and bought a different one almost 2 years ago, knowing we weren't moving any time soon. We love our new house.

As for the city, it just isn't a good fit for us. It's a tourism area and a retirement area. For those who live here, some "locals" make a point of making sure the rest of us know that they would rather us not be here. I actually read a comment in today's paper about how "outsiders" try to come in and change things. Last time I checked, I pay taxes too and I've lived here for 7 years. It is very clique-ish and the cost of living is one of the highest in the southeast (though compared to many other places, especially the northeast, it is low). The really bad part about the cost of living, though, is that it doesn't correspond with the wages. Housing is particularly high.

DH and I are also hot weather/humidity people. Aside from the recent heat wave, it just doesn't get hot enough here for us.

OP, you say you live in the mountains, but also a city. The only "city" I can think of would be Asheville and that would be more like a large town. Charlotte isn't in the mountains, but it is much larger. Just curious if you mean that you are in Asheville because I couldn't see Boone as a city either.

BTW, I'm a native of NC and take no offense when anyone doesn't like it here. I've lived in the mountains, piedmont, and the coast and all have their positives and negatives.

I am ok with the town in which we live, don't really like my house. We would like to move a one day though, somewhere with close proximity to the mountains/lakes or near the beach. My job is something I can take wherever but dh's is a little more specialized so that may be a factor (if we don't wait till retirement to move). :confused3 Who knows?

Yep, it's Asheville (Actually a suburb of). And Asheville is now considered a city. The MSA has become quite large. We were very selective as to what part of town we moved in, based on schools, primarily. The last couple of years some things have changed with the schools and now that's not what we were hoping for. The schools are actually still very good, just not what it was (zoning, type of school, schedules, etc.) when we moved here in 2004.

Like I said, I understand why other people like it. It is just not us or what we like. Like someone earlier said, "it's just not where our heart is."

I really, really don't like living where I live. For that matter, neither does my husband or my younger daughter. If we ever say we don't like it, we get looked at like we are crazy. How dare we not like it here. We are basically stuck here for the moment.
Is anyone else in this situation? Especially when it's a place that most people really love.

I hated living in Dallas area. Im not fond of the town I am in, and would move if the market wasnt lower then a burial plot.

I want to just say thank you all for replying and sharing your stories. Sometimes I feel like I'm alone because most people I know love it here. I do have one friend who dislikes it as much as I do, but thanks to kids' activities, we can't get together as much as we would like. I don't feel quite so alone now.

I don't mind where we live but it's not my first choice. I still talk about moving back home after several years and hopefully someday we will. Home is the Houston area and while it's not perfect it fits us well.

DFW is fine though. It's way too hot and crowded but people in this area are for the most part nice and that's important IMO.

I am in NE Ohio also - Twinsburg. We moved here 3 1/2 years ago from the Pittsburgh area. I also love my town, but I would love to be back in the Pittsburgh area.

I'm originally from the Pittsburgh area too (well, about 45 minutes north) but have been here in NE Ohio most of my life. I wouldn't want to move back to my hometown because it's so backwoods and in the middle of nowhere, I don't know how ANYONE could live there. But I'd love to move to the Mt. Lebanon area. Close to the city but great schools & an established, walkable city. There's just NOTHING like it anywhere near Cleveland. The established, walkable cities that are close enough to downtown aren't safe & don't have good schools. :(

I live in Cuyahoga Falls now & love it. It's not everyone's dream city but it has everything that DH & I would like. Cheap utilities, reasonable property taxes, a very good school district that's supported by the community, an awesome marching band (lol, DH & I are both former band nerds), and so many fantastic community events. And now that we have a child, I'm realizing how many great things the city offers for children... library story times, wading pools right around the corner, free summer camp-type programs at the local parks, I could go on & on about the stuff there is to do around here with a preschooler.

Just wish it was closer to Cleveland. Or any large city. I don't particularly care for the suburbs. I'd love to live somewhere where there was reasonable mass transit. DH looked into the bus system up to Cleveland and his 45 minute drive would be 2 hours on a bus. :sad2:

I LOVE where I live. I love my town, LOVE my house and even love most of my neighbors.

I like the fact that I am less than an hour's drive to Chicago, so I have all the benefits of a large city without having to deal with the traffic and parking on a daily basis. I enjoy the museums, lakefront festivals, restaurants, theater and beach. I actually enjoy having four different seasons, although I would have denied that back in February with our lovely blizzard.

I think we have an excellent school system, and my town has has two beaches/boating recreation areas, and best of all, a train station less than a mile away which can get me all the way to Chicago in about an hour.

It also helps that all of my family are within a 40 minute drive in any direction. I honestly don't think I could be this happy anywhere else. :)

I really like the town we are in. It is on the ocean and close to Boston (on the train line.) I can walk to many shops and restaurants, yoga, my bank, the post office and the library. It is beautiful from May-October- but the winter-ugg. That is why we moved to FL in 2004. The home prices as well. DH got a great job offer last year and we moved back to MA. I am from NYC so I grew up with winters but I HATE the cold. It has been 50's and rainy the past few days. In JUNE! I miss Celebration and my condo. My parents and a lot of friends are still there. I miss working for Disney. We are considering moving back if we get a good job offer. We were both on contract and it was up so we needed something ASAP with benefits and had to move:( It is hard in this economy. His job is great and we are thankful for it, but I am working very part time from home and am going stir crazy. This is not where we really want to be.

I hate where I live! DH doesn't want to move bc of our families being up here. I say we can always visit and they would all be welcome to visit us but it's gonna take a little more convincing.

I don't dislike where I am but if I had a choice I would be in East TN or West NC in the mountains! I travel up that way couple times a year and I always feel like I am coming home. Can't wait for DH to retire lol

Wow I was lucky enough to visit Asheville last year and fell in love. I think I saw that this town was a top town to retire in too. But you are right about its just not where your heart is. I live 40min away from the mouse and know tons of people who would move here in a heartbeat. For us its just a place to live till we are able to retire and move to the mountains.
