Do YOU pronounce the "H"?

More importantly, do you pronounce the S in Illinois? I'm from IL, and it's a big no-no, but I've come across way too many people who do. "oh, you're from I-L-L-I- NOISE, huh?"

And being a neighbor to Missouri, do you pronounce it Missouri or Missoura? Lots of people around here put an "a" on the end instead of an "i" (older people mostly.)

I say Illionois with the s but I think it with the s in my head.

I say Missouri.

No "S" in Illinois. I had a boyfriend from Addison and he was quick to tell me "no s". I have never forgotten that!!

i say it like 'veer-cle'
im australian

I say car, but if I were to say vehicle its ve-hick-el.

I also say Illa-noise and Miz-zur-E.

I'm from North Cara-linna.

I pronounce the H. In words like where and what I don't pronounce the "wh" as a /w/ sound but more like blowing air. Hard to describe that. Regional thing I guess (SC).

Michigan here.

We typically say car, but if the other word has to be used (THIS IS THE POLICE! GET OUT OF YOUR VEHICLE!!!) it's typically without the "h".

We also don't pronounce the 's' in Illinois and Pepsi or Coke is referred to as 'pop'.

I'm from Michigan and I say it without the h. I lived in New Mexico for a long time and worked at a car dealership so I was constantly heard it pronounced vee-HICK-el. They also put an emphasis on the first syllable in the word insurance and it would make me cringe when someone would say, "I have IN-surance on my vee-HICK-el." :lmao:

They thought I pronounced things pretty strangely, too, so we were all even.

I do not pronounce the H. I currently live in MD, but lived in NY, HI, FL and VA when I was growing up.

I'm from Michigan too and I agree with all of this.

My husband is a native western NYer, and I'm from southwest Louisiana--We both pronounce the H!

No H.

What about when you say words like "what" or "where"? Do you pronounce it as '"H-wat" or "Wat"?

ETA: from NY.

I grew up in MA and have lived in ME for (omg!) almost 20 years, and never used the H.

One thing that drives me batty is when people decide to add an R in there, like "veerickle". A lot of people do that up here, and it makes me want to bite things! :rolleyes1

Haha, my dad is always adding "r" to words. Drives me nuts. His big one is garage. He says it garr-Rawge.

Around here it is vehicle with a soft H.

And 5000 posts for me in 8+ years and no tag. I feel like such a loser!

Yes... It's "vee-hickle" like a pickle to me. :rotfl:
