Hubby and I are having a discussion about resales on a house. He thinks people prefer Pergo (laminate flooring). I think most prefer real hardwood floors. What do you prefer?

Thanks,
Deb

I chose real hardwood floors. I may be biased...My father & brother each own a wood flooring business and they believe the only way to go is the real stuff! I am lucky enough to have a home full of hardwood and I love it!

Between the two...real hard wood. But I REALLY like ceramic tile. :)

Why in the world would anyone prefer pergo over real wood floors?? Most of the pergo looks fake, you can certainly tell right when you walk in that pergo floors are not real wood flooring! Give me a real hardwood floor anyday!

I picked hardwood floors, but I'm also the one whose entire house is hardwood..and I have carpeting over every square inch of it. LOL
I hate walking on it, hate sitting on it, love soft cushy floors.
But I do love the way it looks!

Believe it or not I had hardwood floors and I just put pergo down. I love it, it is so easy to take care of. I'm getting older and just couldn't keep up with the hardwood. :flower:

I love my Pergo. I dust mop it weekly (sometimes more, depending on my hubby's mess factor), and wet mop it about every 1 1/2 weeks :)

I don't think many people choose Pergo themselves. I believe that their wallets choose it for them. ;)

There are two different questions here: What people prefer, and what resells a house better. Remarkably, we humans aren't always rational creatures, so the answer to these two questions can be radically different! Laminate doesn't add anywhere near as much to the value of a home as hardwood flooring. While the upkeep of solid wood is a bit of a chore, the very things that make it hard to keep up are the very things necessary to make a wood floor look beautiful.

Hard wood all the way. My brother has perago in his den, gag me, it looks fake. I am installing hardwood in my dinining room, living room and stairs. the only rooms to have carpet is the bedrooms, I like to get out of bed with something soft under my feet. :)

Me too. I'm in the process of pulling up the carpeting because of dog pee issues and contemplating refinishing the wood and putting down area rugs. Not sure I can get used to the idea though. I like carpet too much.

If you're talking about getting rid of your carpet and going fake or real...figure out the % of what you'll get back when you sell...people will pay about the same for both, so you're much better off going as cheap as you can. I've had both, and if the laminate is of good quality, and installed correctly it is beautiful. I'd also stay away from the weird colors...whitewash, etc.

We have hardwood floors throughout our house, but Pergo in the kitchen. I can tell you for sure Pergo is a lot easier to care for!!!

Pergo is certainy easier to care for. Damp mop and that's it. You must be much more careful with hardwood when you clean it. Also, Pergo is not going to scratch like hardwood, and it's a LOT cheaper.

But overall, hardwood is much more attractive and adds to the market value of your home. I know people LOVE their Pergo but I can tell it's Pergo the instant I walk into someone's home. I don't know why, but Pergo "bothers" me in a home. Not so much in a business. The place where I get my hair done has Pergo and it looks great. It just doesn't pull off as well in a residence.

We have hardwood floors throughout-even the kitchen. I love them. So easy to take care of, no shampooing, no stains to remove, no worries. We had a little poly put on them and they shine like the dickens with a damp mop! I have a few Chinese and east Asian rugs here and there as accent but yesterday, we took up all the rugs, swept and mopped the whole downstairs and I sat and enjoyed JUST my hardwood floors. My friends bought a very expensive house in an exclusive suburb that had laminate floors-they are awful!!! I would have walked right out of that house without looking at another thing. To each his own. My BIL insists there are SOME very realistic laminates; he sells flooring wholesale. I say-show me.

While I'd value hardwood over laminate throughout a house, the exception would be a kitchen, bathroom, or other area that is perhaps damp. In such rooms, I would rank ceramic tile as the best, vinyl next, then laminate, and solid wood last.
