We had this conversation but it was regarding much longer flights. Would you prefer a 14 hour Newark - New Dehli India or a split 8 hours to Germany and 8 hours to India with a 4 or 5 hour layover? Ended up, I didn't have a choice, I had to take the layover but I probably would have picked it anyway.
We flew 16 hours non-stop from Newark to Beijing last year and were fine. Once we're settled in and all our carry on electronics, snacks, and other distractions are unpacked I don't want to have to repack until we reach our destination.
We found there was a good amount of room to walk around and stretch during the flight.
I don't mind layovers if the people I'm with are all adults. If I had children in my party I would want a nonstop flight. I can't be on an airplane for too long...I get sick
I've flown 16 1/2 hours to CHIna and they gave us a 3 hour layover in Anchorage during which time they WOULDN'T LET US OFF THE PLANE. It sucked so hard.
Never had the door slammed on me, but back in the 60s when I was in the army military flew half price standby. We had priority over civilian. I worked in an area as a civilian where I knew who to contact in the airline industry. One time Three pretty girls charmed their way on a flight standby. I told the gate agent to take them off and put us on. He laughed at me....until I sighted the regulation and who I would contact. He couldn't get them off the plane fast enough. Three soldiers were happy.
I might have hyperventilated. I was held on a plane once, with no ac, and I nearly crawled out of my skin. We were just waiting for a gate. (We were a few minutes early or something.)

I hate that- we sat on a runway in Florida for almost 3 hours once- couldn't get out of your seat to use the bathroom or anything since we were on the runway. My godson had to go to the bathroom so bad and by the time we got up in the air and the seatbelt sign was off he ran to the bathroom but didn't make it---what a miserable flight that was!! It was so warm on the plane, it was from Disney so the plane was full of kids many crying--it was enough to make you pull your hair out!!
