Do you own the threads you start?

When you start a thread do you control where the thread heads? I'm not talking obvious hijacking, but the twists and turns that occur on a lot of threads.

I try to 'own' it.

ETA: Whoops. I meant I try to come back and post frequently. I misread your post.

I dont think so. You cannot control the post of everyone who visits and makes a comment.

However I have been guilty of starting a thread when I knew where it would head :rolleyes1

I was actually wondering something similar. If one starts a thread, does one have an obligation to 'host' the thread? by that I mean going back and reading posts and responding to at least some of them....

That's different than 'owning' a thread. I don't think that one can control the life of a thread, but I do wonder if the thread starter has an obligation to at least check back and reply (at least once!)

Not having started many threads in seven years, I am not certain of proper etiquette.

But to answer the original question, no, I don't think that anyone can fully 'own' a thread. 'Host' it maybe, but 'own' it no.

Consider the starting of a thread as the establishment of a Wild Wild West town: If you try to be the sheriff, you're as likely as not to be shot. :)

No, and I think it's silly when people try to admonish the other posters to stay on the subject -- except for obvious hijackings.

Hmmmmm....I'll bump it if it didn't get as many posts as I thought it would, does that count :scratchin

I was going to say the exact same thing. Often it is interesting to see the twists & turns a thread will take--part of the fun of a message board, I think.

I think it depends on the subject. If I'm asking for advice I come back frequently to read & respond. But other times when a thread gets crazy, I back away.

But I haven't started a thread in a long time, so I don't know the 'rules' anymore!

Can someone give me all the thread rules? No, I don't think the OP owns the thread. If I ever felt the need to own, I'd just get my own board.:snooty:

But then, I'd get lonely talkin to myself all the time.:upsidedow

I don't think so. Once you start a thread, it's kind of like it takes on a life of its own. You can't control what people say in response to whatever it is that you're posting about (advice, stating something funny you saw, etc...). I think it's a risk you take when you start a thread. If you aren't prepared to have all kinds of responses (even from people who don't agree with you), then you probably shouldn't start that thread.

JMHO, of course. :)

I own that dang PMS thread. The rest of you...OUT!!! ;)

I think when you start a thread, you should be able to expect that it stays on topic.

However, I don't like to see people boo-hoo about it just because they don't LIKE what people have to say about the topic they started.

I usually check the thread a couple of times and respond again if I want to, but I usually only have time to Dis at work (I know, horrible :rolleyes1 ) so if I'm busy, I don't always go back.

I love fine threads...

I don't need to worry about the threads I start because they are usually dead and buried within 5 minutes. :sad1:
