Depends on the time of year.....Most times of year you can walk up...but you might have to wait for a specific time. But busy times at busy restaurants there isn't a chance...

It also depends on what restaurant you want to eat at. I am not a PSer every single day but I PS what I really, really want to make sure we get in at a reasonable time.

Both Zurgswife and Michigam Mom are correct...and I just wanted to add to the OP: as far as I know, they do NOT save seats for guests at each resort. The WDW restaurants are just like any other restaurants in that if they are not busy you can walk up and get a table. If they are busy, you'll have to wait or go somewhere else.

There are other factors too...for example, a summer drenching thunderstorm at 5:30 might mean that lots of people who were going to a park or another resort for dinner will decide to stay "home." In a case like that if you don't have a PS you'll be waiting a long time!

PS General Rule of Thumb
You probably dont need a PS unless your visit falls into one of the following catagories.
You want to do a character meal.
You are visiting during a school vacation or holiday.
You want to dine at one of the more popular restaurants (Cindys, WC, CG, Ohana, Narcoossees, Le Cellier, 50s Pt, Sci Fi)
You like dining at 7pm. Probably the busiest time for dinner.

Sorry to say that they dont save tables for onsite guest. But they do allow you to make a PS up to 90 days in advance.

Oh yes, you need a ps, even if you are staying at the resort you want to eat at, and no..they do not save spaces for the guests staying there. Believe me..we know. If you want to eat at a popular place..make a ps, or plan on a good wait, or no entry at all.
