Do you need a passport to go from US to Canada?

the borders are a bit tougher now, but not too bad. We go over a lot and they type in your plate numbers. If it's a car that passes frequently there is almost no delays. Sometimes we get asked for DL, sometimes not. When we had people from out of state in the car it was a bit more involved, more questions, more time. We have never been asked for birth certificates...but if you are out of state I would bring them, better safe then sorry.

We live within an hour of 4 crossings into Canada (one being the Niagara Falls Rainbow Bridge). Just make sure you have 2 forms of ID. As well as ID for any kids traveling w/ you. That is the biggest mistake I've seen people make. They don't bring any ID for kids, it's not like an airport where you don't need it if they are under a certain age. I just bring DS's birth certificate and that is fine.

We cross the border 12 or so times a year. 90% of the time in Niagara Falls. They are really lax about getting into Canada, but coming back into USA/NY they are a lot more "strict". Even more so over the last few months than last year. So, just be sure to have adequate ID for everyone and it should be fine.

Just a note I have had to show DS's birth certificate the last 3 times we went. Also, on our last trip (2/03) over, we needed 2 forms of ID.
