I am looking for a new stove and unfortunately I don't have gas. I have a 20 year old electric coil that I hate with a passion so I was looking at the smooth glass tops to replace it. I am on the fence, they look so nice but I worry about it getting scratched or worse because I have some very heavy cookware pieces.
I would love to hear you opinions on yours if you have one. Do you love it, and is it easy to keep it scratch free?

I love mine. I tend to be hard on things (I'm not always very careful) and after 6 years, my glass top stove doesn't have any scratches on it. The most important thing is to never use an abrasive cleaner on it. I use that paste/gel stuff to clean it, rub it on with a paper towel and wipe it off with the paper towel. When you get a burned on spot, there is a scraper tool to use to clean it (essentially it's a plastic holder for a razor blade).

Never had an issue, and I love it. :goodvibes

I used to have one and found it very easy to clean. I like it very much!

However, once I was making an icing where I had to cook sugar to "soft ball stage" (very hot!) and accidentally dribbled on the stovetop. It did "pit" the surface, and there was no way to get it out.

But if I had to do it over again (electric) I so would!

No, I absolutely hate it. I want to switch to gas at some point, but if I had to choose between a smooth glass top and an electric coil, I'd take the electric coil.
The scratches don't bother me. What bothers me is that it takes forever to cook stuff. It doesn't get as hot as an electric coil and if your pan is not 100% absolutely flat on the bottom, it's even worse.

oh tag fairy!!! :lmao:

Seriously, I love mine. Like a PP said, just use the proper cleaner on it. Oh, and it takes take along time to cool down, be sure to move the pot or pan off the hot burner if you don't want it to burn/continue to cook.

Do I love it? No. Would I ever go back to coil? Not in a million years. I did manage to crack my cook top.

I have had a white one, which I picked out, which I did like. It was a Kenmore Elite. For some reason it was very easy to keep it clean.

Now I have a black one which I hate. It always looks like crap with scratches. I know it is a cheaper model of stovetop however having a black stovetop shows every tiny speck of dust or scratch if it is not cleaned to a pristine level.

You do have to clean them everytime you use them for them to be shiny, which is a pain, because you have to use surface cleaner and blade. So it is not hard to clean, it is just a pain.

You cannot use glass cookware and you not supposed to use cast iron on it. I know people do it but you do run the risk of scratching it.

However, I would get the glass cooktop over getting a coil anyday of the week as PP says.

glass top over coil and gas over anything else on the market.

I hate mine...but I would rather have it than an electric coil one.

Love my glass top! After almost 11 years it still looks new! I also use cast iron on it too.

I don't love mine...don't hate it either.
I have black and it is a pain to stay clean....even dust shows on it  Drives me crazy.
Hasn't been a problem with the "real" cleaning, just have to do it all the time...even water boiling over.
Also, mine heats just fine and I have not had a problem cooking with it.

I have coil at the WA house. Haven't used that since being in this house. We'll see what I think when I go back in Jan.

hate mine.shows every little scratch.

I have a question tho for others. I accidently touched the top with a kitchen towel. The pattern of the towel is imprinted on the glass. will the scraper do any good getting that off?

I LOVED mine-then we moved and I am back to the stupid coils. Mine was black with white flecks and didn't show anything. I used a flat razor to scrape off any burned junk-super easy-takes about 30 seconds after it has cooled. We rent out that house and the guys that were renting were NOT good about cleaning that so this past summer I went in, wiped it off, scrapped it, looks brand new again (and showed the guys how to clean it). I would LOVE to swap that stove for what we have but they are different colors.

Have you thought about induction? It is a smooth cooktop, but it heats up faster than electric. It's a little pricier, but it's worth it for the cooking speed, plus, when I move something off the burner, the heat cuts off. Big bonus! The one thing about induction is that you need to have pans that will work on it. If a magnet will stick to the bottom of your pan, it will work with induction. I use All Clad Stainless, which I have been using for years.

My cooktop is black, and I see a couple of scratches on it, but nothing horrible. It cleans up pretty quickly, and I haven't had any issues with anything cooking on it and needing a scraper to remove it.

Here's a link to the one I have.

I have used a razor blade to clean off stuck on stuff.

we have one and I like enough. We didn't have gas in the house when we bought it but we do now. When the time comes to replace it, we may go with gas though instead of another glass top, but if we didn't have gas, I would get another glass top rather than the coil. The one we have is gray and black speckled looking so scratches (if we have any) do not show. I use Weiman's glass top cleaner which works wonders.

Thanks for all your opinions :)
For those of you that like/love it, what kind of cookware do you use? I have hard anodized pieces, some very heavy weight and thats what I'm worried about.

mckryan, we have thought about induction, my MIL had it and I loved cooking at her house. Right now we are looking for a temporary replacement since in a few years our kitchen will be re-done. I don't want to invest in something and then it not go with the kitchen, but if we don't convert over to gas we will most likely go with induction at that time.
