I think its perfect for the park. I am sure they could have came up w/ something different but the fantasia hat is perfect for the movie theme :sunny:

I like it better than Epcot and AK "center piece", but not as much as the castle in MK.

the hat to me and my family is the "icon" of the park, not the mouse ears water tower. love the hat.

I like the hat. It's always been there for as long as I've been going, so I don't know any different. However, the people who have been to MGM pre-hat seem in general to hate it. It's the same with the big hand on Spaceship Earth at EPCOT, I don't mind it, but the traditionalists loathe it.

Gonz of Lancashire, I think you nailed it on the head. Those that have been to MGM before the hat, hate the hat. It's not the hat that I dislike, it's where they put it. Before the hat it was a beautiful "picture perfect" spot, now it looks cheesie. Don't even get me started on the hand on Spaceship Earth! :furious:

So true....why would Disney initially try to use the water tower as the park icon? Whos idea was that.

The hat is great!...I actually think it should be bigger.

The Studios are my favorite park, and have been since opening, and I very much dislike the big hat. The main reason I don't like it is that I think it's tacky, and like another poster mentioned, it messes up what was a very pretty picture spot. A secondary reason is that basically the hat is a store, so to me the whole thing seems like a glorified souvenir stand. And no, I don't like the decorations on Spaceship Earth, either, so I definitely fall into that traditionalist/purist category. Must be getting old! :rolleyes2

I do like the hat, now. At first I wasn't a huge fan, I thought it congested that area more than it already was.

But now I like the hat, Every park had something to represent the park, (the castle, spaceship earth, tree of life), except mgm until the hat, so it makes since that they added it, and it is a good illustration of the theme of the whole park.

I do like the hat, never saw MGM without it, but when I see photos prior to the hat, I realize the photo spot that was there! The Great Movie Ride building is very cool, and you really can't take it all in with the hat! JMHO!

I don't think I can explain it any better than OurMsBrooks! Hits the nail on the head.

I don't know MGM pre hat, but I think they could have come up with something better. At first I hated the hand on Spaceship Earth, I guess you can say it grew on me, and I don't 'mind' it any more.

Don't mind the hat -- just don't like the location. And that it is only a small store underneath.

why would Disney initially try to use the water tower as the park icon?

I used to live in Los Angeles. Out there, it seems all the major studios have a water tower icon. I remember Warner Brothers had a famous one.

The whole "point" of walking into MGM is that you were walking into a glorified Hollywood, with the Chinese Theater at the end of of the street. What the heck does the massive hat have to do with old Hollywood? Nothing other than it was in a movie for 15 minutes. It would be like taking the castle off the end of Main street at the Magic Kingdom and replacing it with a giant cardboard cutout of Mickey as the Sorcerer's Apprentice and saying that it fit because now at least the theme fit MGM and Epcot.

Scroll all the way down, its lthe second entry from the bottom, a former Imagineer's take on the hat. The bottom one (as long as they don't post today!) is one on the hand at Epcot. IMHO that blog should be required reading for any Disney fan (though I think most do here already!). :thumbsup2
