Do you like opera?

Just curious if there are any opera fans out there and if so what your favorite opera is. We have a historic roman ampitheater in the town that we live in that hosts outdoor opera's throughout the summer. (Here's a link with some photo's if anyone is interested: http://www.arena.it/). We may have an opportunity to go to one, but I really know nothing about them. If you are familiar with opera, which one would you choose to see, Aida, Toscana, Carmen or Nabucco?

I'm not a big opera fan, but I bet it would be fun to see one in person, especially at a place such as this. Kind of like sports for me; I'm not one to sit and watch on TV, but love to go in person.

My vote would be to see Carmen....since it's the only one on your list I've heard of! Enjoy!

Carmen! You'll enjoy it! If the performer of the lead role is sassy and spirited enough, it should be fantastic. I did a few operas in college and Carmen was my favorite. You're probably already familiar with some of its melodies without realizing it.

I've been a season ticket holder for my city opera company for years. All four operas you list are terrific. However, the one which you'd probably be most familiar with is Carmen. The music has been used in some movies and cartoons -- for example, the Bad News Bears theme. Go for it! You'll have a great time. Also, every opera I've been to has had a superscript above the stage translating the opera -- sort of like subtitles.

I took a Music Appreciation class in college and I fell in love with some of the operas and some of the great opera singers. I never in a million years dreamed that me, a folk/rock type of person could appreciate and like opera, but I really do. I would choose Carmen too. I think you will really enjoy it.

Don't listen to it, but have respect for it. I think you should definitely go to see it while in Italy. You might become a convert.

Love opera!!! My favorites are La Boheme and Tosca. I was lucky to get a ticket to a benefit Pavorotti did for the research part of our Medical University here about 20 years ago. Small auditorium, one piano and Luciano. I will never forget it!

I am an opera fan and have had tickets for years. My favorite Italian opera is Turandot and my favorite German opera is DerRosenkavalier.

I love opera also. My favorite is LaTraviata. My father was an avid fan. For my 16th birthday, he took myself and a friend to see Madame Butterfly and then to an opera-themed restaurant here in Phila called The Victor Cafe. A friend of his owned the restaurant and the waiters and waitresses sang opera. The restaurant still exists and the waitstaff is still singing.

The Phila Opera Co is doing some popular favorites this season, though I can't remember what right now.

It's the only music I like less than Country. I can't stand Opera. It gives me a headache.

If I'm home on a winter Saturday I listen to the Texaco Metropolitan Opera broadcast after I'm through with cartoons.

My favorite opera is Tosca. It has everything you want in an opera......

I also like The Barber of Seville because Bugs Bunny spoofed it.

Yes, I am an opera fan. For someone totally unfamiliar with opera, I would definitely recommend Carmen. (I'd recommend it to those familiar, too! ). Aida and Tosca are great, too. I'm not as familiar with Nabucco as the others.

My personal favorites are pretty traditional choices: La Boheme, The Marriage of Figaro and Carmen. I like many others, too.

christineann, that's great about being able to see that Pavarotti recital in person. I saw Kiri Te Kanawa in recital once. She is my favorite soprano.

Of the classical operas, I have seen Il Travatore, Aida (both at the Lyric Opera in Chicago), and Tosca (at the Vienna Opera House). I don't go out of my way to see operas, but I appreciate them when I see them.
