I would find it hard to be in a wedding that was just an overpriced party where the emphasis is on how everyone looks, but I've loved the weddings I've been in. All were focused on the religious ceremony with budget appropriate receptions determined by what the bride and groom could afford.
One was VERY simple with basically a potluck reception given by close family and friends - no matching dresses, one was a church wedding with a cake and punch reception - we wore matching dresses where the bride provided the fabric, one was fancier with a full buffet reception - we wore matching dresses but the bride was very careful of our feelings.
For my wedding I just had my sister and she wore a dress that we both liked that she could wear again. I felt kind of bad not having the three girls that had me as their maid of honor, but I just never wanted that kind of wedding.
I went to a wedding as a child where there were 12 bridesmaids! Rumor was that there was a lot of scrambling to fill all those slots. Even as a kid I thought it seemed like a big show and I just knew I would never do that.
