Most people know what their purpose is in life. They chose the career path that fulfills them. Then there are others such as myself that had no clue. Don't get me wrong, I like my job, but just don't see myself doing this for the next 20+ years. I searched and prayed and God FINALLY showed me my dream. I'm not suppose to work in accounting, I'm suppose to be a chef

I picked culinary arts for my major when I went to college, but then decided that college wasn't for me and left. I only completed the first semester. I know now that I should've went to a culinary arts school instead of college. All that paper writing, and test taking stuff is not for me. So I researched and found a program that I can get certified in that will only take about 4 months. At last, I can come up with a 5 year plan for my life. Hopefully 5 years from now, I'll be opening up my own restaurant. I'm actually excited about it and can't wait to get started. Has anyone else changed career paths? How did it work out for you?

Iminterested in hearing the replies too.

I went to Beauty School, got my liscense - and Im doing HelpDesk now. :confused3 How did I turn into a Senior Level Help Desk person, from Beauty School?!?!?

And Beauty/Fashion/Hair/Makeup stuff??? Its my PASSION!! I love it!

I feel like I am still sort of young to be sure of my purpose, but I do think I have found it. I used to want to be a physician, I was pre-med. The courses I took were so structured and didn't allow for any crativity. My minor was psychology, and I loved those classes. So I changed my major and eventually my career goal. I want to either do something involving cognitive behavioral therapy (did you know that just by talking to someone you can change the structure of their brain? I find that to be so incredible!!) or maybe something cognitive neuroscoence research. Right now my major is psychology and my minor is cognitive neuroscience and I could not be happier. I feel like I am really working towards something, even if it will take a while.

I really feel that this is the right path for me, all I need to do is hang in there for the rest of undergrad years then get into a good Ph.D program. If all goes according to plan I have my Ph.D. by the time I am 26! (thats if I am not able to graduate a year early)

Yeah me too. I always knew I wanted to do Photography and/or film production. Went to college and majored in both got my degree and here i sit in a law office doing office services, it was the first job i got out of college since i needed a job and insurance and such. Well almost 5 years later I havent left and altho I feel motivated I just think nothing ever works out since I dont have much work experince in film.

Last year I switched my way of photography and started doing kids/family but mainly kids. Well I did pretty good and hope to continue this year so I can go about doing a companyand all that legit and not on the side.

Anyway to asnwer your question, I had been really feeling the pressure lately due to I jsut turned 26 and here I am and no prospect of wanting to be here for even another couple of years. I dont know if you guys have seen the movie You, Me and Dupree but I feel like one of those pods he talks about that just do a lot of languishing or w/e he calls it and get flack for it, but one day you'll get the call from the mothership. Honesly I know it sounds so corny and stupid, but I think one day I'll wake up and it'll be the day that something happens and I get my career going. In the meantime I try to look for a different career and keep my hopes up and do this on the side till I can officially do it either full time or close to it.

I had always wanted to become a doctor, but that only lasted until my first chemistry class.
Then I wanted to become a good consultant. Well, I'm working on that right now (or better: I should be working on that instead of DISsing, oops! )
But actually, I want to be a wife and mom, and have a nice job too, but not the huge career anymore that doesn't leave time for anything else.

Next to all that, I think the purpose of my life is to go often to Disney and spend a lot of money on the Mouse, so that Mickey doesn't go bankrupt!

Herc, I am glad that at least one of us has been successful! :lmao:

I always wanted to be a lawyer. I went to college, law school, passed the bar exam, and then had a tough time finding a job in my geographical area. So I worked as a temp in an office for a few months, got hired full time as an office manager, took over their accounting. I stayed there for 10 years while I bought a house and had two kids, and created a happy life for myself. I am now the controller of an upstart engineering firm, and I feel pretty good about my career.

I am not sure if this is my purpose. I am not sure I believe there is just one purpose for every person. I think if I had to pick a purpose, I would have to say it is to be happy - and I am.

Your last paragraph is great. I need to live by it. I am a lawyer and very unhappy in my career. You may have dodged a bullet and that may be the reason you're able to say you're happy today.

My purpose is to work at an airport in some degree, and to take annual trips to WDW.

I've always just wanted to be a wife & mother. I believe I am a caretaker. I love making a home. DH & I have our own business & I work 6 hours a day in the office doing everything...its my Disney Pass. I enjoy my life & do not feel I am missing anything. I believe I am perfecting my soul for God & work on that every day.

My purpose in life is to irritate the heck out of my kids. So far I'd say I am achieving that goal. LOL Just kiddin. Although I do irritate them.

I've always wanted to work in a hospital lab. That's it. And I do. I  my job and wish I was healthy enough to still do it full time.

Can you change the focus of your practice to work in an area that brings you joy and fulfillment? I know it can be a challenge, financially and professionally. I'm still green, but I have to believe that it's one of the greatest aspects of the profession.

I don't believe that my purpose has much to do with what I do to pay the mortgage. Purpose to me is more about how I live my life. Am I following the teachings of the faith I profess? How do I treat the people that I come in contact with on a daily basis? Do I live up to my responsibilities? Those are the questions that came to mind when I read the OP.

I am the trouble that hones my family into diamonds:rolleyes:

I'm really really sorry...but when I read the title of this thread, all I can think of is Steve Martin in The Jerk

My purpose is to raise my kids in a safe, happy, healthy environment in hopes that they can become independent and productive adults.

ETA: Oops. I meant "happy, independent and productive adults."

Most people know what their purpose is in life.
I'm going to respectfully disagree with your statement here. I think most people don't know what their purpose in life is, and some never discover it. If you have found what you consider to be your path in life, you should feel lucky. I also believe that you may find your purpose or goals change as you get older and that's perfectly normal and healthy. The danger would be in staying so devoted to your original purpose that you fail to recognize the change in your needs.
