Do you know what chow chow is?

I know what it is. I can't stomach it. My grandmother makes it. My Mom loves mixing it with collards and other veggies.

I love chow chow but I never knew it was considered a southern thing. When we lived up north, I used to eat it whenever we visited the Amish Country in Pennsylvania! The chow chow at
Good and Plenty Restaurant is delicious. Now that we live here in SC, I have seen it canned and sold in a few places and was surprised to find it. I always thought it was Amish!

up north we say, its supper, its supper

Ick!

:teeth: Chow chow is similiar to salsa, but without the tomatoes.:) It's yummy in pinto beans.:teeth: I'm not sure if all have it, but all the ones I've had have a cabbage base.:)

I love chow-chow and I am from Indiana, I wonder if its an Amish thing too, because thats where I get it is from an Amish store.

Wow. A blast from my past! My mom (from North Georgia!) made chow chow all the time when I was a kid. Love it! Hmmm...anyone have a recipe?

Never heard of it...but being the cabbage lover I am, I am interested in it:D What else is in it?

Chow Chow, an old Indian favorite popular throughout the South. Salted and ground cabbage, green tomatoes, peppers, and onions are thickened with a butter roux, then pickled.

The kind I have on hand is a hot chow chow. It's got jalapeno peppers and they use Vidalia onions (the best onions in the world, imo:)). Mine doesn't have any kind of tomatoes though.:)

Next time you're at Randalls go to the pickle aisle and look for Del-Dixie's. :)

So what do you actually DO with Chow Chow?

Is it medicinal? Is it like a mustard plaster where ya spread it all over yer bod? Is it like canned toe-jam? Do you spread it on bread? Boil it? Nuke it? IS it dog food?

Oh I have SOOOOooooooooooo many questions! :jester:

I thought it was that dance those cats do in those stupid Cat Chow commercials. . .

;)

:teeth:

I'm a Brooklyn girl, and I love chow chow. My grandmother used to make it when I was little. When my parents would take us down south (SC), they'd always bring several jars back. I remember eating it with collard greens.

My grandmother would also can apples. We'd eat them with home made biscuits.

Now I'm hungry.
