Do you know what a Zoetrope is?

We found the coolest thing at California Adventure inside the Animation building. We just got back. On Sunday we went to see Talk with Crush and they pointed us towards the Zoetrope across the central area.

We walked up and it is a large cabinet that when the exhibit inside spins, it looks like a 3-D cartoon of Toy Story. We were amazed at what fancy technology it was. It is actually something that has been around since 1834. The exhibit starts and stops spinning so you can check it out yourself. Absolutely amazing. It shouldn't be missed by anyone visiting California Adventure.

We saw this when we were leaving the Anamation Academy a couple of weeks ago. It was so amazing that we made another trip to the Anamation building to see it again during the weekend!

I got some pictures of it, it is really neat to watch!

What you see what you first come in

The lights drop and the display begins to spin (not this fast but this is what the camera captured)

Then the lights begin to strob causing the charecters to look like they are coming alive and performing for you

Not easy to capture but you can sort of see the movement here

This is a really fun addition that goes I heard about every 2-2.5 minutes and is really neat to see how the eye and brain communicate.

This was one of my kids' favorite things along with all of the Animation Building.
We spent a lot of time watching it several different times! It's really cool!

That was great to watch on Youtube! I found it on the link from Bellelinus post! I can't wait to see it in 12 days! YEAH!!! Cannot wait!!

Sorry to be a stickler, but it's a zoetrope, not zoestrope. Like Francis Ford Coppola's company, American Zoetrope.

I was film major in college, so I just had to make the correction. Sorry.

No problem. I changed the thread title to get it right. Thanks for letting me know. No matter what it is called, it is way cool!

Thanks for making the change! Now I feel much better!:) I've loved zoetropes for many years now. I have one at home that's got a nice leather exterior on the barrel and has slots you look through to watch the changing images inside, as it spins. Really nifty.

It's all persistence of vision, the same principal that makes movies work, but an extremely early version of it. When you really think about how a movie works, with 24 still frames moving past our eyes each second, making it look like everything's moving in a very real way, it's all just amazing. The zoetrope really breaks it down, so it's easier to comprehend the whole process.
