my son has mentioned how he and his friends know about sex..He didn't say much else but i want to tell/teach him the correct things..My husband said he could have that "talk" with him but i don't want him to know too much...just what a 9 year old should know!

We happened to drive past two dogs who were in the process of mating once. My son saw it and it led right into the discussion while we were driving home from school. When we told him, he thought it was gross and said we had to be telling him a big story. I think he was about your son's age.

I had _Where Did I Come From?_ by Peter Mayle when I was a child. It's humorous and gives facts without going into intense detail. It has drawings that look like normal people, too, and not movie stars. ;) I would use this for my kids when it's time.

the school nurse usually has great books for the kids about sex, getting your period etc. I'm sure if you ask she will let you borrow one.

what this has to do about Disney for Families beats me!

I think this is a situation that comes up in each and every family, at least it should. OP, at 10, I give my kids a book It's So Amazing, which gives all info, except oral sex (STD's, pregnancy, birth control...). It is MUCH easier to discuss these topics when they're younger - once a tween, they really don't want to talk to you about these things. However, if you open the dialogue early, the door remains open - I can still discuss sexuality with dd13, who doesn't talk to me about anything!

Just last week, question turned into another question, and dd8, dd6, and ds6 asked what sex was. I gave them the basic biological facts, they said gross, and that was that.

Thanx so much for the replies..i will definitly look for some books!

We just had that talk about 1 month ago.. DS is 9 going to be 10 in December.

Anyway... went well... I answered all of his questions. Told him that if he heard any of his friends discuss it and had questions or wanted to verify anything come to us (his parents.)

Not sure how much detail you want to go into here, but That's so Amazing is a great book for kids. It does explain everything but with drawings.

instead of a sarcastic comment, you could just ignore this thread if you don't like it. there are tons of "off-topic" topics on here.

OP, "where did i come from?" is good. plenty for a 9 year old but not too much. good luck. my ds is 4 months old - so glad i don't have to worry about "the talk" yet!

the problem is that i've reported to Mods this issue. As a former Mod of another site (with over 20K users), OT threads just clogs up valid discussion that is relevant to the current forum.

Its a pain to go through half a page of OT topics to get to actual Disney For Families threads...

That is the point. If Mods don't respond to reports. then I'll post in here and hope they see it.

"Questions Kids Ask About Sex : Honest Answers For Every Age" by Melissa Cox

That is the book I got my son when he was around 9 years old. It has different chapters for different age groups. I just stuck it in his room and told him that if he was curious to read it and if he had any questions to ask either DH or I.

It does get very advanced, but he is better off knowing it all rather than only some of it.

I did put a rubber band around the more advanced areas for ages 16+ in the book (I rubberbanded the pages to the outside of the book so it would need to be removed to read them) so that he would not go too far into the book if he started reading it.

I highly recommend it. I am a very blunt person, and this book explains it all.

I have taught classes in a childhood sexuality program - the 4 main books we use are:
It's Not the Stork (ages 4+)
What's the Big Secret? (ages 5+)
It's So Amazing (ages 7+)
It's Perfectly Normal (ages 10+)

All of them are very good, present things in a very truthful but child-friendly way, and include lots of realistic drawings. I think that the earlier you start these conversations, the easier it will be to continue them as they get older and really NEED them!

We had to have a simple (:rotfl2:) talk with DS9 this summer because he was going to be spending a lot of time with his older cousin. His cousin's parents just went through a divorce and his dad started dating another guy. So, we knew something would come up and we wanted DS9 to have a little understanding from our point of view first. Unfortunately, we waited too long (1 week) and he had already had the discussion with his cousin.

Anyway, it actually worked out well because he had some questions by this point and if we would have talked to him first, he would probably have asked his cousin any questions he had.

going through this myself! Two DD's, 9 and 7 will have to find out soon, as their old enough, that when my preggo self starts to show, they're going to wonder how it got in there. I'm dreading it, so OP, thanks for bringing up the topic on the Disney for Families Board! ;)

I had these as a kid and they made their way to my house a few years ago (this and the companion "What's Happening to Me?" about puberty).

Truthfully, I see the family forums as a resource for families who have a love of disney in common, and many OT postings are reaching out for the support of a likeminded soul. I have never seen a moderator of the disboards have a problem with off topic postings (as long as the topic isn't on the banned list), and I hope they never do.
OP, I am so glad you asked this question, I also am the mother of a nine year old, and putting off "the talk". I will definitely be looking into some of the suggestions here. :goodvibes

Thank U all who had book suggestions etc. I usually post on the budget board and we talk about budget related stuff besides planning a budget trip to disney so i thought my question would fit well on the family board...perhaps some don't like what i did and perhaps you'll feel differently when you have a question not disney family Related!
