No. I have a device that olds them at the correct angle and you push a sharpening stone over it. It takes about 5-10 minutes per knife. Makes a great edge.

No, but I need to and will have it done sooner or later since I've started using a good set.

I always bought cheap knives and just thew them away when they got dull because I would only make them worse using a knife sharpener (the metal stick with ridges.) I can't afford to throw these knives away, so I have to get them to a professional sharpener. They're as dull as trying to cut with a block of wood.

I would if I knew where to go but as it is I think I just need a new set soon. According to Tony Bourdain's book, "Kitchen Confidential" which I am now reading, there are only a few I really need and if I buy them at a reasonable cost I'm better off just replacing them then they go south since most people don't keep up with them properly "oiled carborundum stone, followed by careful honing on a diamond steel" and I am most people, (page 76, a good read.)

I'm finding that the folks who do this professionally are learning that they need to go where people who care about food go, so they're popping up at the various farmers' markets.

Yes. I have a sharpening iron that I use each time before I use the knife but then I also get them professionally sharpened about every couple of months

We are going on vacation with SIL and her family next week and at this time I am not trusted with sharp objects. So the answer would be no, we do not have our knives professionally sharpened.

My DH sharpens mine. I'm no chef or anything, but I cut lots of tomatoes and pieces of meat, and I think he does a noticeably good job! ;)

No, my step-dad bought my hubby a pocket knife one year and a sharpener set another year. So when they get dull, he sharpens them at home.

Yes. $2.50 per knife.

I will use a steel on my own, but they still need done professionally about every 6-9 months.

"the metal stick with ridges"

FYI, a sharpening steel does not put a new edge on a knife. It straightens out any nicks/bumps that occur during normal use.

DH does them most of the time but we are going to have them done pofessionally. There is a booth at our Famer's Market as someone else said.
We've had the same set for 18 years.

Yup. All the grocery stores do it for free in their meat department here. Drop it off today, pick it up tomorrow.

Yes, our Mom & Pop hardware store has our knives a few times a year.
