I remember once when my son was really little (maybe 3 or 4?) and I asked him a question and he said, "Wait a minute, let me find the file" and then looked to be in deep thought, but you could almost "feel" his brain working. He's told me since then that he physically flips through files in his head to find facts he's filed away. I didn't relate that to synesthesia, but maybe I should have.

YES!!!! And I never realized anyone else was like me until I read "Born on a Blue Day". Wow could I relate with him....

I see colors for numbers and letters, days of the week, months. Also, sometimes I feel shapes in my mouth. I don't know why I do some times and not others. :confused3

Also sometimes I get a taste in my mouth when I see particular colors, but I don't know if this is a "normal" thing.

I'm very sensitive and can be very emotional - not sure if this correlates to synesthesia or not.

I am very much the same way. And it's one of the reasons I do not drive - the sounds and everything are so overwhelming to me - each sound brings up a new "color" or "feeling" and it all gets jumbled and I cannot concentrate on what is in front of me. I have pretty bad panic attacks because of it all. I can be fine one minute and then a myriad of noises start - coughing, talking, radio, road sounds and they all come at me as colors, feelings, visions. And it all just makes me lose my breath. It's a very overwhelming condition to have - I have been like this as far back as I can remember. I remember in Geography class, winning the geography bee - I could remember each state/capital b/c each state was a unique color and each capital was a unique picture to go with that color. It's very, very strange.

And, my emotions are ALWAYS all over the place. I don't do well in most new situations and I have become somewhat of a hermit b/c of this.

Bumping this up because we just found out that dd13 has it as well...Hers is different then her sisters. DD19 sees letters and numbers as colors...DD13 has the *smell version* she associates certain things with smell!

So now DD 17 is upset that she doesn't have a *super power* like her sisters! LOL!!

I think it's funny you added a "I have no idea what that is." option. I was glad to see it before I went to look up what it was.

Having now looked up what that is, I am aware if this condition, but didn't know what it was called. I still don't have it, though.

This reminds me of what Marilu Henner from Taxi has, highly superior autobiographical memory or Hyperthymesia. Is that related to synesthesia? Ive never heard of it before but Ive wondered if my DD10 has a form of Hyperthymesia, she remembers everything down to the last detail.

She gets really annoyed that we dont remember the things she does, she always asks questions like "remember in Pre-k when we went... and I was wearing...on this date?" Ill ask her what day of the week it is and she's usually 99% right.

She doesnt do it as much as she did a few years ago but I just figured she has a really good memory.

That is SO cool!

I knew about it because I've read a few books about it: A Mango-Shaped Space by Wendy Mass and Ultraviolet by RJ Anderson.

The brother of RJ Anderson sits beside me in the English department at our school. I used the book with my Grade 9s. :teacher:

I just realized the other day that when I am told someone's name or when I think of someone's name, I always see it (in block letters, by the way, and colored) in my head.

It seems so weird to me all the people who say they don't have synesthesia. It's almost like a large group of people saying they don't blink or don't ever have an itch or something. This is just something that has always been and that I took for granted.

I'm pretty sure that my DH does. He sees numbers as having genders. I think it's neat.

Letters, numbers, days of the week and months all have genders and colors for me. I never knew it was a "thing".

I know this is an old thread, but I was just doing an internet search on synesthesia and this thread popped up.

I never knew what synesthesia was until recently. I mentioned it to DD14 and apparently, she has it and knows all about it. She associates colors with letters, numbers, and days of the week.

DS12 only associates colors with numbers.

I don't associate colors or sounds or tastes with anything, but I see dates, days, weeks, and months as if they're physically on the ground. It's really weird. For the months of the year, I see my old backyard, driveway, and sidewalk of the house I lived in when I was very young. January starts where the driveway and sidewalk meet, then Feb, March, April, & May are along the sidewalk. June turns down the walkway that led to the back porch. July and August go across the back yard, Sept goes along the side of the driveway and Oct & Nov go along the back of the driveway. Dec completes the driveway and meets up with January. I guess it's like a slightly misshapen oval, but it's ALWAYS in that same spot.

I never knew that everyone didn't do this.

Interesting! I see the months on a clock face.

I started a new job recently and I'm an assistant to three counselors. Well each counselor has their own color (for organizational purposes) and I keep getting confused because their names don't match their colors. :)

LOL! I love it!
