It's now 12:30 and DD is still sleeping, and actually if she woke up now, it would be early for her. In the summer, she would sleep until 4:00 if nobody dragged her out of bed.

Does anyone else have one of these Rip Van Winkel teenagers?

I have two of them!

Although to be fair to them, they are both fantastic about getting themselves up if they have work or school.

But if they have nothing on their agendas, they can easily sleep til the middle of the afternoon!

They stayed with their dad last night. Older DS had to be at work at 7:00 a.m. but I'm certain that the younger one is still sawing logs right now!

My son is 13 (and ADHD). Up until this summer, year round, we were lucky for him to sleep 4-6 hours a night. Well, this summer, if he stays up until 2 or so, he will actually sleep until noon somedays! I know this is bad with school coming up, but it is great to know he is finally sleeping. SOme of the medicine he is on "can" make him sleepy.....we have just never seen it :)

We added a 17 year old boy to our family a few months ago. He just woke up about 5 minutes ago, and it's 1:00. Actually, I can't believe that he woke up this early since we didn't say anything to him. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that the baby is playing the piano. ;)

We're homeschooling him this year, and our school starts Monday. I hope he enjoyed sleeping in today, because his freedom is almost up. :teeth:

Studies have shown that the teenage years are the ones when we need the most sleep and the sleep pattern is not condusive to early rising. Unfortunately, most schools start before teenagers are really ready for their day to start. I was amazed at the hours my college-aged sons said they kept - not unusual to stay up most of the night and sleep most of the day (I don't think that either ever had a 9 AM class!)

I am a late sleeping teenager.:teeth:

During the school year, I get up at 6 every morning, I guess just because i know there are consequences if i show up late for school. But for some reason, during the summer it's so much more fun to stay up until 2 a.m. and then sleep until after noon.

During the week, if I have work at night, I will wake up 10:30-11:00. Thats the one nice thing about summer!!

I think it's normal for teens to sleep late when they can, and I believe their bodies require it. We have a 20 yo DD home for the summer and she sure can sleep the day away...of course she can also stay out all night:rolleyes:

I wanted to add that my niece is one of those, too. She has to be at school by 7:00ish this year (1st yead high school). School starts before 7:30 and she is out by 2:30.

I think that is SOOO early for them.

Count me in as a parent of a late-sleeping teenager. He's up at 6:30 the rest of the year, so I figure let him sleep in now. I think he needs it, besides, he may be secretly staying up at night when we're asleep.

Do you mean my 'hamsters'? I call my sons that during the summer because they are so nocturnal- easily up all night, with frequent meal preparation, and could sleep all day. There have been times when as I am gettin up for work, they are getting ready for bed (5:30am). Goes with the age, I guess- Sheila

I'm right with you Sheila, my 17yo is the same way. I myself was never like that growing up.

I have a pair , my DS 15 will sleep the whole day in his room . He has a fridge in there ( dorm size) and he has a bathroom up there so I do not see them unless I go looking for him !Same with my DD17 she has everything she needs up there , they dont come down untill after 3 pm sometimes. I will trade you 4 toddlers and a bitting dog for my 2 teenagers LOL

Wishing everyone a

wheatenwalker,

I've had the same occur with my daughter this summer. She stays up most of the night and sleeps quite late. When asked why she does this her reply is no one bothers her at this time of night. It drives me crazy. Luckily summer band is beginning and she will have to be there at 8:00 am. ;)

I normally go to bed between 12:00-1:30AM, year-round (school year it is due to homework, summer just because.) During the school year I wake up at 5:45AM (school starts at 6:45!) So I let myself sleep in during the summer...lately I have been sleeping in until about 10. I can't sleep in much later because the sun comes shining in through my window and wakes me up. As for how long it takes me to get out of my PJs...that's a different story...;)

DD, 17 is like that too. 5am is not an unheard of bedtime and she sleeps till 3 or 4pm. I blame the computer and AOL IM. If she's grounded off it, she goes to bed much earlier.

Glad to know mine arent the only REALLY late night-ers out there. This is probably no surprise to anyone with teenagers, but I really believe you have to pick your battles and the sleep thing isnt one I care to fight!!!:p Sheila
