Do you have breakdown cover in your car hire?

I only take fuel as an extra if it's not included - otherwise I just make sure I have the required insurances and that's it.

We need 2 drivers so I either book where you get 2 drivers for free, a company like Hertz or Avis that add a spouse for free or a gold package as the extra driver fees are always really high!

Breakdown cover is included with all rentals. They will try upsell to these products:

http://www.alamo.co.uk/HelpfulInformation/740/uk/RSPLUS
http://www.dollar.com/TravelCenter/TravelTools/RoadSafe.aspx

These cost around $5/day, not something I have ever bought or needed, if I had bought it for every rental I have done in the US I would have paid out around $3,000 for nothing.

They also could try sell you personal injury, this should be covered on your travel insurance.

Satnav is something else they try push, you can buy one at Walmart for about the same price as 7 days rental.

Other thing they try sell is an upgrade, they will tell you "you have no chance of getting your luggage in the car, you need to upgrade" I once got "the car you have booked is not up to UK safety standards, for the welfare of your family you really need to upgrade"

Basically don't believe a word they say, don't be pressured into anything.

It's the towing aspect which bothers dh.
We've only ever had one car which needed replaced-but we drove to the car centre at mk-
Which is the primary reason for choosing alamo.

He's concerned if we did happen to break down-outside the disney bubble;
and hadn't taken out any extras(specifically roadside recovery) we would get stuck with a huge bill

If a car can't be repaired at the roadside its their responsibility not yours.
Yes you do get the odd problem with a rental car but I have rented around 50 so far without an issue, as I said if I had paid the extended breakdown cover I would have wasted $3,000, its just not worth it to me.

as Wayne said, at alamo they often try to upsell you that roadside nonsense for $5/day. Don't fall prey to their pushy sales pitch. Are you telling me they won't come out to get your car if you break down? They're not going to leave the car out on the road. It's utter nonsense. And they only rent you a relatively new car (they get rid of cars after a certain amount of mileage). Don't fall for their hardsell.

It is not utter nonsense although it may not be cost effective for anything other than a short hire. Some aspects of hiring a vehicle are not covered by the standard insurance. Examples include lost keys, tyre damage, windscreen damage and so on. We hire for about five months of the year so do not take any additional cover but, instead, have an annual policy issued in the UK to cover all of the "uncovered" items. It costs about £60 so is much cheaper than paying a daily charge.
As an example of such an uninsured cost, as we reached home the other night a tyre pressure warning light came on. The next day I went out to the garage to find we had a flat tyre. I called Alamo who sent out a technician to swap the punctured tyre (it had a screw through it) for the temporary spare. The cost of that service was $49. Rather than return the car for a replacement vehicle I elected to take the car to our local Firestone depot where they actually replaced all four tyres and billed Alamo directly.

the point is, they WILL come out to fix the car when you call...
you will NOT be stranded....
if they charge for the service, they charge - though i'll put up a fight and more than likely not have to pay...
in any case, they will come out to take care of it..
however, the likelihood of it happening is very small and not worth paying that additional money for such an unlikely event...
all i car about is coverage for car damage - every little stupid scratch that they'll try to charge me through the nose for... as well as 3rd party coverage....that's all that matters to me..
