We had a tortise shell cat for about 10 years (she died last year). She had this "thing" of burrowing under the covers and things (one of her nicknames was "Lump").

We, we "acquired" anther tortise shell earlier this year (DH plucked her off the street in heavy traffic - she was 7 weeks old at the time) and she has the same behavior. She burrows under rugs and covers.

Is this a tortise shell behavior or is it coincidence?

We have one. She is 6 months old now and is quite a lovey but does not burrow.

I had a torti a long time ago and she didn't burrow. The cat we have now is a muted torti and she doesn't do that either.

Maybe your kitty is just silly.

I've had two calico (tortoiseshell-and-white) kitties, and both girls loved burrowing under things as well. Never thought about it before! The one I have now just loves tunneling underneath the mattress cover and sleeping there when I pull the sheets off to wash them. But she's an oddball in a bunch of ways already. :thumbsup2

My tortoise/cali doesn't burrow but loves hiding in caves (under the beds, particularly my DD's) -- the darker and the more dust mites in there, the better :scared: She also wheezes/moans in her sleep so you know when she's down there.

my tortie will chew on anything plastic. for hours. she also likes to lay on plastic bags. and chew on them.

That's interesting. I had a tortie about 10 years ago, and she also loved to burrow under the bedspread. My calico doesn't do that, and neither did my other non-tortie cat.

You might be on to something here!

Neither of our cats, one of which is a tortoiseshell are burrowers.
They would rather hide behind stuff and then jump out at you. lol

My tabby loves to burrow...she can't wait for DS to get out of bed in the morning so she can climb under the covers. I guess it's warm.

DS has to be careful to check for the lump in his bed before he flops down, kitty has gotten flopped on before.

My brother has one, and yes, she'll climb under the covers and start purring loudly.

It's so funny you asked that because we wonder if it's a tortie trait as well! Our cat (mix of tortie & calico) & a compulsive burrower!! Under our blanket on our bed, under pillows, we have to be careful when walking on our rugs because she will burrow herself underneath them!:rotfl2: She just lays there like a lump purring away! I think it's very cute:lovestruc but she gets very angry when we disrupt her, even if it's just a little peek to say hello, she will "yell" at us for disturbing her:rotfl:

I havent read the rest of the replies so I'm not sure if it's a trait to this breed. We've actually tried to research which cat breeds like to burrow but we havent found any info as of yet.

I have a tortie and she loves to burrow, even under things like the couch and boxes... anything that will cover her, she's under it. If I am sitting on the couch she will even head-butt me pretty hard to try and get under or behind me. She purrs like crazy the whole time! Must be a tortie thing!

I think it's more of a cat thing.....my ragdoll will get under the covers or anything he can find. my tortie and calico don't do it as much as he does.

They just like the cocoon (sp) like feeling I think. They have a bed with a lid they all fight over. My ragdoll and calico are snugglers, but my tortie isn't. She just wants to sit next to you and jump out at you when you walk by. And chew on plastic. :confused3

My favorite feline is a gray/tan/white tortie. She is the Chorus line kitty in my avatar - LOL! She is 12 but still acts like a young kitten. :cat:

She not only loves to burrow under things, but she has this annoying habit of kneading random body parts of whoever's lap she is sitting on. Whenever I lie down on the couch to watch TV, she jumps up and kneads away for what seems to be hours. I think it is because she was taken from her momma cat when she was too young (we adopted her from the local shelter).

She also has over the last few winters, decided that the absolute BEST place to sleep at night is on top of me. H says that it is my own fault, but I just don't have the heart to move her off. Usually, once I roll over she stays where she lands for the rest of the night (right between the two of us where it is nice and warm). She only does this once the weather gets cold - the rest of the time she sleeps at the bottom of the bed.

She is absolutely the funniest and most people-oriented cat I have ever had!

I have several "muted torties" but only one (7 yr old girl named Angel) really likes to burrow but only in the winter. Right now she's not burrowed but will. Some like it under the covers but I usually have to put them there.... One kitty only does it on one side if her head is uncovered. But will sleep totally under on the other side.... go figure... :confused3

We have one- they are grey and pinky/orange,right?

Ours does not burrow but has a loud purr and likes to cuddle

My calico (similar, with white) LOVES to burrow!

I have never had a calico before, but after we got her we realized she had many strange personality traits. Since I've met many other people who have said their calicos had strange behaviors.

Yep! Our old girl, Spunky, burrows under covers. She also licks and gnaws on buttons on shirts, sweaters or anything else. She is a bit quirky but very affectionate.
