Do you have a JOB or CAREER? Inspired by "Occupation" thread

JOB or CAREER

I disagree with your defininitions of the two words.

A job is doing specific work or tasks, for which you are paid.

A career is a chosen profession, made up of the progressive "jobs" you have within that profession. A career is "bigger" than a job in scope, but having one doesn't necessarily mean that you don't have work/life balance, as your definition would seem to suggest.

Therefore, I have both a job (current role) and a career (theme, pattern, future).

Well, even by your definitions, my job is just that -- a job. I have certain duties for which I am paid, but by the nature of the position and the type of office structure, there's no room for advancement. More money, yes, but unless I become strictly Office Manager rather than just legal secretary/office manager, it is what it is.

Unless they appoint me Queen of the Office, of course. :rotfl2: :worship:

Hmmm... There's not a choice for "both" ;)

I have a job--I generally don't bring home work, although I'll be writing a press release this weekend over my Sunday morning tea...but that's something I enjoy and do best at home rather than in the office.

My career is my passion, the photography. I often use my vacation time from my "job" to persue my "career".

I have had the same job for the last 32 1/2 years in the Underwriting Dept of a major insurance co....they are moving my job from MD to Charlottesville Va the end of 06....I'm too young to retire so I am taking my severance package and am going to do NOTHING for a few months....52 weeks pay will pay off my cc, and my car and leave me with a tidy little sum...and my 10 weeks vacation pay is going to finance a trip to WDW for me and my 2 grown dtrs. (DH can babysit the cats this time). I actually can't wait to be unemployed for a while!!!! Knowing I only have 349 days to go, I am already mentally gone!!!! :rotfl2:

I have one job and one career.

My part time job is just that JOB that I take because I need money with no room for advance.

My seasonal job is one I consider a career because it offer room for advance in sports entertainment management. Right now I am the Concession Stand Manager at minor league baseball park and football stadium. The next step up is front office staff which is year around.

I agree and will add the twist that I have a "profession" of which I have a career made of of many jobs I have held.

I have a "job" -- never wanted a "career". I define the difference as:

job = working set hours, not bringing work home, work stays at work

career = working set hours and other hours, bringing work home, working on vacation, etc.

I do my job to the best of my ability, but my time is my time. Perhaps it's just my interpretation of the two words.

Discuss. (Poll coming)

I define job the same way you do but my defination of a career is different. My idea of a career is a job you love and don't mind bringing some of that home with you if needed. (I DO NOT work on vacation though :) ). I'm a teacher and I bring a lot home with me, but I love it, it is where my heart is and what I plan to do till the day I retire. If it were just a job I would always be looking for the next thing to try. So I am blessed to have a career.

I'm not sure whether I want to be an architect, a marine biologist, an importer/exporter, just an exporter, just an importer, perhaps a latex salesman... just so many options.

What happened to sports broadcaster?

I don't have a job. Or a career. I volunteer at my furniture store, but since I don't get paid it's hardly either. But since I just graduated in college in December I'm looking for either one, carreer, job, whatever, I'll take it!
