I grew up without one. We got one when we built our first house, and again when we moved into this house. And I never liked them much. Didn't seem to get the dishes very clean. When the latest one broke, I got rid of it and added another lower cabinet. I just wash by hand now and actually enjoy it. It's one of the more relaxing jobs and doesn't bother me at all. The kids and DH wash dishes also. No one seems to mind.

I would die without my dishwasher!!!! I HATE to do dishes, hate it.

Where are all the Greenies with all these people saying they do dishes by hand?? that really surprises me with all the people yelling about recycling and conserving and a dishwasher uses far less water than by hand and water is one resource I really believe in conserving and protecting.

We have one, but I can count on my hands the number of times we have used it since we remodeled our kitchen.

It's used on Thanksgiving, during Christmas baking, and my husband uses it to sterilize his homebrewing equipment and bottles.

It runs FOREVER, needlessly as far as I am concerned. The whole time, all I see are the gas, water and electric bills! ;)

Unless you have a really old dishwasher you are better off washing them in the dishwasher if you want to save on utilities.

I saw that posted in several energy saving bulletins, but boy do I beleive it now! I got my dishwasher three years ago. Its portable so I can see exactly how much water it uses. It does what I would use two sink fulls of hot water for (usually add in a third for items that need soaking), in 1/3rd of a sink plus it gets everything off.

Wow! Ours is brand new... bought it Summer of '09! It seems to spray and spray and spray... water!

I should just use it one month and see how bad it really is!

yes using the dishwasher uses less water than by hand. Everyone should use dishwashers to conserve water.

Always have had one since when I was a child in the 60's. Bought a new one 4 months ago because there was an empty spot in the kitchen at the new house and haven't used it yet. But they were a blessing when we had all our kids. I wish I'd had this huge kitchen when all my kids were growing up.

Now our big question is... do we get an ice maker and trash compactor again? I really miss my ice maker although we have them on both fridges. I'm saying no trash compactor but the Hoshizaki ice maker was wonderful but costly.

I've never had an ice cube from an ice maker that didn't taste terrible. They always taste like the contents of the freezer, IMO.

That's why I really miss my ice maker. It's not in the freezer. It's completely seperate and the water goes thru an RO unit. The ice from the freezer units I use to chill food and fill coolers.

Those are perfect!

My parents have one at their company, but it's HUGE! I didn't know they made "personal" sized ones!

We have one and I have had one since the house we moved into when I was 4. I can't stand washing dishes by hand and I can't stand having dishes all over the counter. We run ours about 6 days out of 7.

I have 2 dishwashers (when we built our house, the kitchen cabinet design person was the one who suggested it - so I thought she must know what she's talking about since she was losing a cabinet sale in the spot the second dishwasher would go). I'm so glad I have them both! Every night, at least one gets used, and often they both do. And for holidays - it's awesome!

In our old apartment, we didn't have one, and I'd never wash dishes the way my grandma did in a sink of dirty, soapy water. I'd have the water running the whole time. For me and the way I hand wash dishes, the dishwashers probably save me money.

I have two, I call them my children! :lmao:

But, actually, I'm curious. How many people own actual automated dishwashers? Me, I've never owned one in my life.

I have had many. In fact I moved into a model home in Sept 2008 and killed the brand new dishwasher already. It was a cheapie. Last month DH got a brand new nice dishwasher. Oh so nice. We washed dishes for 4 months. You can have it OP.;)

I just sat down here at the computer after loading the dishwasher.

Yes, I have a dishwasher. It's a portable unit so it's on wheels and not built in. I LOVE it. My husband says that he put the requirement for a dishwasher in our ketubah but I'm not 100% sure since I can't read Hebrew :lmao:.

I MUST have one. It's a necessity, up there with a shower and electricity. Not out of laziness, but because I like my dishes to be as clean as they can get.

I agree!! I hate eating off of hand washed dishes---they just don't seem clean to me!

I have always had one, even growing up I don't remember doing dishes by hand. Right now my dishwasher isn't working properly and we haven't had it fixed so I have been doing dishes by hand since mid summer:headache: I miss my dishwasher oh so very much:sad1:

yes we have one and yes we use it. My kids still do the dishes but they have the dishwasher to use. :)

I don't think I've seen a house built in the last 60 years around here that didn't have a built in dishwasher. Sort of like a shower head in the bathtub, folks just expect homes to have them.
Heck, even a lot of RV's have dishwashers now.

Of course, fireplaces used to be the norm too, a lot of new homes don't have them anymore.

My parents didn't have a dishwasher in their first house, but other than when I was in a dorm, I've always had one.
