Do you have a child with no common sense?

I amnot talking about a couple of dumb things they did cause they wanted to or their friends are doing it and they know it is wrong but did it anyways. My dd 6 has no common sense at all. Everyday all day. She is so book smart that she lacks the common part. Here is a few examples that recently happen,

The other day she forgot her backpack at school, fine most kids do this,

I asked where she left it ?
dd : in the hallway
me: ok why was it not on your back
dd: because the bus came to quick
me: why didn't you take it with you when the bus came
dd: I don't know (typical answer)
me: why was it not on your back
dd: it was but it fell off and I did not realize it :rotfl: :confused3
me: what you did not realize a backpack fell off your back
dd: yeah
me: I have worn backpack also and you can realize if it is not on your back

This morning I told her to get somethings to play with cause she was coming to work with me. She has her barbies in a backpack. I told her to empty her school backpack and fill it up with movies and other things. So she empties the backpack and starts putting the barbies from the other back in the empty one. :confused3

Anyone have this problem?

Even though I often accuse them of lacking any common sense, I think that they really aren't too bad.
My wife on the other hand I really have to wonder about, I mean, come on, she married me.

I think it's just being a kid. My son forgets 1/2 his stuff and loses the other 1/2. :teeth:

I have this 13year old that is going through what I have decided to call a "I Like Peaches" phase.

As in you can be standing right in front of him, look him square in the eye, and ask something like "Brad, have you done your homework yet?"

pause pause pause
blank look

"Brad?"

pause pause pause

Kid looks back at you and replies with some totally random phrase similar to:

"I REALLY like peaches."

I honestly hope this is just a phase and he isn't going to be like this forever.

I think you just described my younger sister :rotfl:

She's so book smart but is lacking big time in common sense. Wonder how that happens :confused3 :teeth:

Yes, DH's sister's son is that way - soooo smart in school, but no common sense at all. DH says it's his sister's payback for being so mean to him when they were growing up. :rotfl:

Both my kids went thru phases of it and only my DH never outgrew it ;)

Actually, I see this in kids alot, especially the smart ones. Also some of the reasoning and decision making processes are still developing in their brains, just about the time they start to get a grasp, they hit adolescence and their brains turn to jello for a few years.

So many kids get everything done for them that you don't really notice their lack of common sense until they are slightly older.

Hang in there, it will most likely improve, give her lots of tasks that require her to use reasoning.

I have a DD who is a little bit that way, but I think hers is more a case of teenage jello brain like mamacatnv described.
:rotfl:

I guess my DH's sister was always very much like that though. Her nickname is Ding if that tells you anything.
You know, one of those kids who got straight A's all through school but duffed job after job because she was so darn loopy.
:confused3

Yep, that's my oldest to a T. He's always been really smart, but not a lick of common sense.

I think I'm still like that - do you know I had to read this 3 times to understand what was wrong with the Barbie story!

Haha. I'm a little like that, but not TOO TOO bad. My aunt was though. When she was 10 she put those blow-up arm floaties on her feet cuz she thought that she could walk on water that way... :sad2: ...she is now a nurse... Too book smart for her own good...

Just though of another one that happen this morning. Since they only have three days of school this week I asked her if shewill be having a spelling test this week. She said that they are not having anymore test at all. I ask her again about not having a test THIS WEEK. and again she tells me they are not having anymore tests. Ok so I know that is not true and continue getting ready. When dd was empting said backpack in other post she brings me a paper and says see no test. I then point out to her that it says no spelling test THIS WEEK. She takes the paper back and still only reading no test.

I have a cousin that is like this. Straight A's all through school. He is a JR in college still getting straight A's but not an ounce of common sense. We always told him he forgot to get in that line when they were giving it out.

My stepson has a PhD in biophysics. He does research and is part of a "think tank". Obviously a very bright individual, however, in his personal life he can hardly function! There's no "gray area" with him, he understands no humor *at all* and doesn't recognize scarcasm as well as most emotions. He lived with DH and me his senior year of high school and it was *without doubt* the hardest year of our marriage! This poor fella has no common sense at all and would "appear" dumb to people who didn't know him. We, however, are WILDLY PROUD of his accomplishments! Just wait...bet your daughter's going to make you proud, too! :teeth: ;)

Omg that is her. I can not joke with her or she will get upset. I tell her that I am just joking with her and she is like oh. then I will do it again later in the day and again she gets upset. Hello.

A co-worker just asked what book she was reading, I told her it was a Junie B Jones book. Co-worker was speechless. She could not believe she was reading a chapter book and that her daughter is the in second grade and started to read those books. I told her she has been reading them since the middle of K.

It's funny you posted this, because I've been thinking the same about my DD8. I know many people that are so smart, but they lack the common sense gene. I really hope that I feel this way because I expect her to know so much, since she is usually so smart about most things.
