Either. Depends upon what I'm grilling. I prefer gas for hambergers and steaks. Charcoal for slow cooking and smoking - such as ribs or beercan chicken.
Just fired up the charcoal grill for hamburgers and hot dogs. Of course we had to move the grill undercover as we're getting a lot of rain right now. Oh well.....the flowers needed it.
Love our Weber Gas Grill. We've had one for 17 years now. (OK - truth be told - our first only lasted 15 years, so we are on our second.) Did I mention we LOVE it!
I love the taste of charcoal but hate the warm up and clean up afterward. I used to have a charcoal grill that just sat there because I didn't want to fuss with the mess. Now I have a gas grill and I use it at least twice a week almost year round. It's not as good tasting as charcoal but it tastes alot better then pan frying and I use it instead of just having it sit unused.
DH grew up using gas grills. When I moved in with him, I gave him a big Weber charcoal grill and he is now a convert! Charcoal tastes better, but I admit there are times when gas would be quicker and easier.
With good "briquets" and wood chips in a smoke box, a gas grill can do the fast cooking stuff like burgers and steaks just as good as charcoal - with a lot less start time and clean up. When it comes to slow cooking, though, you can't beat charcoal.
DW's parents bought us a gas grill. We used it for several years, until it became impractical - our kitchen didn't have a back door; the back door was in the basement. A combination of disuse and the Pittsburgh weather kind of rotted it, so, when we moved again, we threw it out. Then, because of finances, we bought a cheap charcoal grill. We wound up prefering it. We had a chance to go back to gas a few weeks ago, and we passed.
