Do you give blood?

I try to give whenever my office has a blood drive, but I'll miss the next one -- DS is having two wisdom teeth extracted that morning, and it will be the first time he's had anesthesia.

I'm O positive, and CMV negative - never had cytomeglovirus (sp?) whatever that is. My blood can be used for anyone whose immune system is low... infants, patients on chemo, HIV patients, etc.

SSB...you must have a few special donor pins then?

Might be something for the pin collectors out there! LOL LOL

HAHA!!! SSB shall have to check out the Ebay market.... I could start giving several times a month, and make a fortune!

Er, um... maybe that is not such a good idea.... hehe....

:) :) :)

Found it:

What's Your Blood Type?

O Rh-positive: 38 percent B Rh-positive: 9 percent
O Rh-negative: 7 percent B Rh-negative: 2 percent
A Rh-positive: 34 percent AB Rh-positive: 3 percent
A Rh-negative: 6 percent AB Rh-negative: 1 percent

Nope, it's been advised by my doctor that I don't. My blood won't come out quick enough and if it can't come out quick enough apparently they pitch it. Too bad too, I am O-

I give blood at every drive they have at work. I look at donating blood like insurance. You pay a monthly fee to have a service available in case you might need it.... Giving blood is extra special, because you can share it with any one that might need it.

I am also an ORGAN DONER.... They can have whatever they need from me after I am gone.

Did you guys know that if you have surgery, and you're expecting to use blood...that your friends and family can donate to refill the blood bank in YOUR name? Those donations then are factored into your final bill and you don't end up paying for the blood used!

You can also donate for your own usage if you have a scheduled surgery....they just bank the blood until you need it.

That is just so cool!

Yes, I give blood at least 3x's a year. We have a blood drive at work 4x's a year.

around here the Red Cross has been pushing plasma donations. you can do that more often than you can donate whole blood.

Nassau County, NY has a great idea. they bring the bloodmobile to the courthouse, and encourage people who've been called to jury duty to donate. I don't know what perks they offer, but there is an incentive to donate blood. of course, the lawyers who show up to donate don't get the same perks -- but we do get to cut the line.

they won't accept blood from me. :(

i am o- too, helenabear. :)

I would if I knew they would be able to get enough out of the one vein. But seeing as they can't then I don't.

After going through IVF some years ago & having them trying every vein they could get their hands on to get enough blood for the required blood tests, then no way am I going to subject myslef to that again.:(

I don't blame you Nutsy! I probably wouldn't either...if it were that difficult to find a vein.

and caity, I wouldn't worry about them not accepting blood from you. It happens all the time, sometimes all it takes is a cold or a recent ear piercing for them to say "nope...no can do", you just never know what will keep you out of the donation loop.

I do, but last time I went my iron was too low, so they sent me home.

When I was DIRT POOR in medical school (we're talking $1.66/day for food), I sold my blood for $50 every quarter:( :( :( .
Years later I was rejected as a donor because I had contracted malaria:( :( ........

No, I can't give either. I almost pass out after two vials of blood at my doctor's office. They have to have one person on each side of me also when they take my blood because sometimes I start shaking so bad. My doctor has told me that I should never give blood. Also, I don't think I can give because some of my meds and my health.

Eros, wow...malaria.

Spend some time playing with mosquitoes in your back yard, did ya?

I would really like to be able to give blood but I was told that I can't. I asked again recently and got a big old no with no hesitation.

Between having AOSD and taking Methotrexate (which is a chemo drug) I've been banned for life.

DH Obi-Wan donates regularly though

I haven't but I should. I guess the main reason which isn't really a good one, is my veins roll over and I usually am stuck numerous times and you know how that hurts!

No, I can't give blood........even to myself. I tried prior to surgery but my veins collapse with the size needle they use. In fact, it is always a feat to draw my blood..........a very tiny butterfly needle is all that be can used......and sometimes even that doesn't work. I am usually in for multiple sticks when I need a blood test.

I no longer feel guilty about not being able to give blood.

I just had to post this link to things that can and can't keep you from giving blood. Something like Malaria or TB doesn't necessarily keep you from giving blood which I was surprised with (since my sister can't give because she spent too much time in England :() but it is all here
