Do you get paid the week after you work?

My work week is Monday - Sunday. I am supposed to get paid for that week on the following Friday, however it does not always work out that way. I work for a very small business and the owner also does the payroll. She is often distracted by her children and husband and does not get the payroll done on time. This results in me or my husband having to come back to her house to get the paycheck either later that day or evening or the next day as we want to get it into the bank on Saturday. I'm getting kind of tired of showing up to pick up my check and finding that it's not ready. Technically she has had M-Thurs to get it ready for me to pick up on Friday, so there really is no excuse. :sad2:

I work for a large company now, so I don't have that problem. However, my last job was at a small company (owner and 4 employees). We were paid every other Friday, and the owner was great at getting payroll done on time. Never had a problem.

I've only worked for large companies, so never had a problem like that. But I think it's entirely unacceptable for a company not to pay you on the day that is agreed to. Does she think her employees are independently wealthy and just working for fun? People have commitments, mortgages, bills with due dates. I would be addressing that with the owner or finding another job.

I've been paid on varying schedules at different companies, but it was *always* paid on time. The exception was when I did childcare and that woman was just horrible about paying :sad2: I put up with it because at the time the hours were perfect and the pay was good, but so annoying. I understand how frustrating it can be. With us it wasn't our primary income, so we'd just wait til the next week to pester her about it. One time she was two weeks late.

But... honestly I find that unacceptable for most people. And I've always been paid within one week of the week worked. I even worked one job that the schedule was Fri-Thur so the owner could get us the paychecks on Friday right after we worked.

Thats a problem because she does the payroll herself. I'd be unhappy with that situation as well. Have you tried to talk to her and explain that it messes you up and is inconvenient?

I work for a large non-profit. Our work week goes from Mon-Sun. Payroll is processed on Monday then goes to an outside payroll company. Direct deposit (we are required to have direct deposit) goes into our account on Thursday, though technically payday is Friday. Back in Aug, when Irene hit, there were a lot of power outages and something happened in they system and our paychecks didn't get direct deposited until Friday, and a lot of people went bezerk over it... stuff happens sometimes. But it shouldn't happen on a regular basis like it does with you.

I own a small company and still use a service to do Payroll. It's about $40 a month and it covers all the taxes(govt, state, insurance) deductions and paying them, sending out W-2's, mailing pay check stubs and direct deposit. It's well worth it even for a small company and the fees are tax deductible, her time doing it is not. It would take me or an office person several hours a month. I would recommend it to her, people are surprised by how cheap it is. ADP and Paychex are good choices.

I feel your pain. I get paid 6 weeks after my clients actually travel and for a while getting my check in a timely manner and in the correct amount was near impossible. Luckily things have gotten a lot better more recently. I think it's a good idea to recommend the payroll service. That could be a big help.

She maybe using a payroll service and opting to just print the checks herself. If she submits a Friday payroll earlier than on Friday the taxes will be taken from the bank account on Friday morning. If she submits payroll to the service Friday afternoon (she will pay an extra fee) the funds will come out of the account Monday or Tuesday.

The problem could be cash flow and she's playing the float.

DH worked for a guy that had 3-4 employees and every once in a while it would be delayed. Once or twice it bounced, so I think it was a cash flow issue. I think he would get paid on Monday for the previous week.

At my office we get paid on the last day of the pay period before lunch so we can go to the bank at noon. So actually we get paid before the last day of the period is over- if I would have to leave before the day was over for a sick kid, nobody worried about it. I have done the payroll for 5 years now so I write my own check. We have always been on time, even if the owner had to go get a loan to cover it. Now, at my suggestion, the firm has a savings account with 2-3 payrolls in it so I can cover it myself in a pinch. Haven't needed to do it yet.

I hope you can get this resolved. You didn't say if it is a problem financially, but I see that it is a hassle for you trying to get it from her at her house. Kind of reminds me of how I have to ask my pastor all the time for the hymns I need to play as organist each week. You would think after 9 years he would just put them on the organ automatically early in the week, but no, I have to leave notes and hope that I get them in time to practice.

I used to work for a large construction company in PA that had work in a number of states including FL. Back in 2007 FL was hit with a Hurricane and none of our FL employees were able to receive their paychecks due to power outages. One of our Executives flew to FL, with a case full of cash. Each employee received $200 cash to hold them over until the banks were able to open a couple days later.

In the OP's case, it is just ridiculous that your employer is doing that to you. I would look into labor laws in your state and see if you have any recourse.

Do you get paid the week after you work?

I only wish! For two of the jobs I work I get paid monthly. This means my checks don't show up for 4-6 weeks after the work I did.

Plus the one place pays inconsistently because of their small staff and accounting processes. I never know when my check is going to arrive. This last month they cut the check on the 3rd but by the time it got signed and mailed to me I didn't get it to the 15. This was for work I did at the beginning of the prior month.

Consider yourself lucky that you get paid weekly.

I do contract work and get paid during the last week of the month following the month in which I work. For example, for the work I do in October I will get paid the 29th or so of November. It took me a long time to adjust, but it's OK now.

Small business owner here. We cut paychecks every two weeks, so our employees are being paid for work that they did one to two weeks prior to the issuance of checks. A pay period runs from Monday of week #1 to Saturday of week #2. Paychecks go out religiously on Thursday of the following week. The only exception would be when an employee has a planned vacation for the week of payday. Then we hand-write the check on Friday of the second week of the pay period.

Not meeting payroll can be a major red flag for a company. It can mean that the owner is disorganized and unreliable. Or perhaps they are playing fast and loose with their accounts payable numbers. If I were employed by a company that did this, I would be concerned.

For an employee who is counting on that paycheck to be there when it is supposed to be, it can wreck havoc on their own budget. If you're on good terms with your employer, you might want to point out to them just how difficult it makes life for you when they don't pay you on time. If it becomes a real problem, you might want to begin looking for a position with another company that doesn't have such organizational issues.

About 10 years ago, I worked for a very small retail business (6-8 employees depending on time of year). Payroll was every 2 weeks, but if the owner was out on business or out hunting or otherwise just out for any reason, we would get paid the following day that he would be back in. I didn't like that system, but I was just a naive college kid and really didn't know any better. Nowadays, that sort of payday system would not fly with me at all.

I work for a large corporation. We work 2 weeks, then get paid a week after that 2 week period closes. So if I worked October 1-14, I'll get paid for it on Oct 21st. I'm salary, though, not hourly. But it works the same for hourly employees.

It's really hard when you are counting on that money. My DH is self employed and in order for us to be paid in a timely manner he has to pay them 7% to get a check in 7 days or we could end up waiting 45-60 days to be paid. After 9-11 he did some work for a company and we (stupidly) let them get into us for over 10 grand. Took a court order to get that money.
I can always tell when a company he is hauling for is getting ready to go under, late checks, they say they never got the invoices etc.....
