Do you follow "the rule"?

I had a neighbor and she and I used to do this! It was never during a "time of need" time, we both liked to cook and would occasionally take something over to share! It was fun to fill the dish and send it back. When I had my babies she brought food and I sent the dish back empty! We also each only had two people to cook for, so it wasn't a burden, it was fun.

If I'm taking something to a new mommy or a funeral situation I always use disposable pans.

No, I have never done that. I just return the plate or pan after I have cleaned it.

When I give friends/neighbors food, I use disposable plates or trays so they don't have to worry about returning something to me. Most of my friends/neighbors do the same. Or I'll give the tray or dish as a gift for a holiday and load it up with confections and cookies.

Never heard of this "rule" and have never done it- it must be a regional thing. I wash the dish and give it back but most of the time people bring things in disposible gladware or aluminum pans (which I do also) so the people don't have to worry about washing it and getting it back to you.

Maybe it's regional, but I think it's a cute, old tradition. It doesn't need to be elaborate - a couple of cookies, some mints - just a token.

Well, the only person who has ever brought something to my house is my mom. When I return her dishes they are usually full-- empty egg cartons, stuff for my niece, and any other items I also need to bring over to her house. Does that count? :rotfl:

My dishes usually come home from her house the same way.

I am in my late 40s and I never heard of that rule until I read it on a mb a few months ago.

Frankly, it makes no sense to me. If I am making a meal for someone, it is because they are unable to do so for themselves due to illness or distress. Therefore, they are equally unable to make additional food for me and it's stupid to make food for me bec I am obviously able to take care of myself. N Also I would never expect reciprocity for the gift I have given them in their time of need -- all I expect is a thank you.
