Do you financially support your cause?

With all of the austerity measures being proposed, I got to thinking about the things that people are passionate about and the possibility of them being defunded or cut back.

I am passionate about the over-population of pets (cats specifically for me). I regularly donate money to the organization of my choice that I feel does the most with the money that they receive. I don't expect the government to fund these things (although I am certain that some funds make their way to this cause).

Yes of course. In fact those causes that the government doesn't support, need our support even more as they do not have government funding.
We support some causes that have government supports such as the earthquakes in Haiti and Japan.
In addition, we have a friend with a little boy with a rare genetic disease that has no treatment and no cure called MPS IVB or Morquio B. The only hope of a treatment for their son is to raise the money themselves(with the support of the non-profit Canadian MPS Society) so they have dedicated themselves to that. We choose to support them both with our money as well as our time with their fundraisers.

I have tried to give a bit more to those causes that I believe in. In one case, I started donating once again to one organization that I hadn't donated to in a while because their funding was cut. I think that it's important to help whenever possible.

Yes we do now. We volunteer and run a small private rescue we get 0 financial support from anyone other than ourselves. We have 5 dogs of our own, 2 cats, and so far had rescued and place 3 dogs and one up for adoption right now. I love animals and I wish I had more time to work with certain organizations (hopefully once I get out of college). We have spend thousands of dollars in vet bills for them and we will continue to do it one dog at the time, we will love to do more we just don't have the space and time needed for more. We also donate food, toys, litter, etc to some organizations in the area.

I donate to Planned Parenthood, NPR, the Arts, my son's schools for supplies, equipment, political campaigns, Cat Welfare and the Humane Society, Homeless Shelters and Homeless Families Foundations, community centers, Food Banks, Senior Centers, Heiffer International and many I have not thought of here. I am not willing, however, to let the taxpayer-the very wealthy-out of their responsibility. As a very moderate member of the middle class, my tax percentage is at least 10% higher than those earning over $500K a yeara. THAT is not fair. They should pay the same percentage of income as I do in taxes. So should corporations. The loopholes should be closed. Fair taxation should be the law of the land.

I support the causes I believe in to the best of my ability, but that doesn't mean I believe they should be entirely privately funded because they are things that improve overall quality of life and because in many cases our tax dollars support other, related areas that provide less benefit to the population as a whole.

I think the red cross does wonderful work so I try to support them.

Yep! Ten hours a week, hundreds of dollars a year. It's nice to see your efforts in action, creating results. I would like the government to help some of the organizations that benefit the public good.It seems they have tons of money to squander when so many small groups are breaking their backs trying to help on the most basic levels in our communities. Yay for all volunteers everywhere!

I fear that with the cuts to programs people will think that they will not be supported. But they can be, if we all pitch in.

I donate to many organizations - but will not be so stupid to start naming things that could be political or religious.

First in my heart though is my undergrad college. My undergrad scholarship enabled me to rise out of abject poverty. I paid my loans of course, but I felt a moral obligation to repay the scholarship money too.

Not sure if I have accomplished that or not. Tuition and fees that were less than $5000 are now well over $50,000. I've given back what I was given but not enough to pay for today's tuition.
