Our children are 6 and 11 and we have never left them overnight. We have gone out for an evening alone and left them with a trusted babysitter or grandparents. We know the day will come when they don't want to go with US but until that happens, we want them with us. We do have our alone time. Once a week we put them to bed just a little early and then order a take out dinner for us and spend the evening together. Another reason we never left them is that my parents work midnights on the weekends and I don't trust DH's parents whose backyard is on a deep, deep lake to watch them carefully. Our DD now 6 is a handful. While she is a good child, she is very creative and needs to be occupied constantly. As a toddler, I had a hard time keeping her safe-she could scale the fence, undo dead bolt locks, and escape from just about everywhere-imagine, she was a week shy of 2-we were in church and thought she was in the nursery which has a gate across the door. As the minister was beginning the sermon, DD runs up the main aisle and tells him she needs to go potty! I could have died. Needless to say, she stayed with us in church from then on. I think it is up to each parent to do what is most comfortable for them. Someday we will have our time to vacation alone and do look forward to it.
